Carrots
« on: October 24, 2012, 18:04 »
Can I get some advice please. I planted some Autumn King carrots at the end of August /beginning Sept (can't remeber exactly when ) and after thinning covered with a cloche to get them going.

They are growing well and established. Should I leave them under the cloche or will they do OK if I uncover them? Will frost damage them?

Thanks.

Keeping a cloche over them will stop the leaves from getting flattened in the snow

They overwinter just fine without any protection, but can look a bit untidy  ;)

Not expecting snow any time soon I hope.  I was hoping they would be ready to eat before then.:D
So Ok to uncover. I just they might do better out from the cloche get more light?

Autumn King do best when sown in spring for harvesting in autumn onwards (if you can keep the rodents at bay!). An early variety like Nantes might be better for a late sowing next year.  I shouldn't think they'll do much more growing now until early spring.  But, I've over wintered young carrots in all sorts of weather for early tiny pickings - if you like tiny !

Ok thanks shoozie. It was a bit of an experiment, so I'll just leave them in and see what happens.
