I have a lot of teeny green shoots, but nothing has happened in a couple of weeks growth wise.

Eyes and fingers crossed for my first decent crop of carrots.
Cheese makes everything better.

CARROTS (NANTES FRUBUND)
« Reply #182 on: December 21, 2008, 06:47 »
Hi,  I am a returning member, I first joined the forum five years ago, when I took on my allotment, and since then, have been reading the posts every week without fail.  I am so grateful for all the information, hints and tips I have gained over the years. I also have a copy of John Harrison's book (Vegetable Growing) which is now my bible.

I sowed 'Nantes Frubund' carrots under cloche three weeks ago and so far nothing has come up, I wondered if germation may be slow this time of year :?:  I live in the South East.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

even under a cloche & in the south east, the weather this past month has been biting cold, the sun's strength is pretty poor (shortest day today   ) so the soil won't be warm enough for germination I wouldn't have thought  :(

Richy's outdoor ones appeared on Nov. 28th, so there's hope!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Noticed some slug trails in my pots this morning, but the carrots seem unscathed.

I have, however, taken precautionary action!

Pleased to report one massive dead slug & real leaves!

Didn't think you'd want a photo of the slug, so here's the leaves!

tam - are these outside under cover or greenhouse?

I have some Nantes I want to try in toilet rolls indoors then hardening off at the garage window before planting out under cloches.

Main thing is that they're there & not leggy. They'll be saving themselves for a sprint finish!

Zippy - they are in storage boxes in a plastic (acrylic?) greenhouse. They were planted 1st November. I dunno if you could start them inside, I've learnt   they tend to shoot up and get leggy as soon as they germinate inside.
