Charlotte potatoes, just for salads?
« on: March 27, 2012, 09:28 »
I've bought Charlotte seed potatoes due to many recommendation on this site and elsewhere.  I'm now wondering if I should have bought them, as they are described as a salad potato.  Do you lot eat a lot of potato salad, or are they good for other things too?  I love mash, should I have bought something more floury?

I would tend to use Charlotte as a skin-on, eat them whole type of potato, but they're similar in qualities to Lady Christl, which I also mash, roast and chip but whose flavour I find vastly preferable. :)

I found that Charlotte were only "waxy" and therefore held together well when boiling in the early part of harvesting - when bigger they became much more floury and prone to the outsides breaking up before the rest of it was cooked (so often finished up being mashed!)

You don't only have to eat them in potato salads - simply boiled with mint added only a few minutes before they're ready, salt and butter - lovely!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

We've grown them on to baking size.

I've always looked upon the term "Salad Potato" as a potato you eat with salad, not necessarily one to make into a potato salad, (which I hate).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thank you all, I am reassured :D.  A potato you eat with salad, not potato salad every day.

They are great in a proper potato salad (not those ones that are often tastless that are simply boiled spuds drowned in inferior mayonnaise)

But they can be sauteed very well, and even roasted whole/halved with garlic, olive oil, rosemary for about an hour.

They are at their best when boiled with mint and then served warm or cold (not hot - which doesnt allow the real flavour to shine)

They make brilliant skin on wedges and roast well whole.
