could anyone reccomend a fragrant climber that would happily clamber over a newly installed arch. I pass through the arch every day to feed our chickens and would like to brush past something sweet smelling.

Climbers don't come much more fragrant than Honeysuckle!

I've only tried two varieties, Belgica, pink flowers but a serious aphid-magnet, and Halliana, less attractive yellow flowers but no aphid problem. Both highly scented.

(However there are 180 varieties to choose from!)

Jasmine wold be lovely.

You could also plant some oriental lilies in pots or the ground near the base of the arch as that would give you wonderful scent in the summer

I`d agree with the honeysuckle.

How about growing a Honeysuckle up one side of the arch and a Jasmine up the other side try and choose the flowering time, so when one finishes flowering the other takes over.  This is what we have done up our arch but unfortunatly I can`t remember the names of them.

I'd favour honeysuckle, if you choose the right varieties you can have scent for a major part of the year.

There`s just one problem with Jasmine. It isn`t a climber, it`s what`s called a wall shrub.
