The belt I am talking about looks like a fanbelt on the outside under a cover

superb, now have a look on the machine (not the engine) for a small rectangular silver plate, on which you should find a model number for your machine. this should start AC, then have some numbers.
the reason that i/we need this number is because like cars, there are often changes to the basic design of a machine even though they might still be call the same model, ie, ford capris (went though a lot of changes but looked the same-ish) ford escort and so on)
the belt for an early model of super major isnt the same belt for a later one.they wont fit.at all.
the engine model changed, so the hieght from the base to the centre of the drive shaft  could be shorter, also the engine posistion on the main frame may be a lttle different, both these factors can make a difference to the belt size.
some of the machines were fitted with a reverse gear, that adds another belt, some had a primary drive belt to a centre pulley, and then another belt to the chain drive, so there's another belt to think of
its a laugh a second in the mower trade, thats why most of us are mad, and unemployable in any other trade or situation if you've been in this one for more that a year or so.
