Jalo hand plough
« on: November 26, 2006, 12:13 »
Following a day at the auction I have just become the proud(?) owner of a Jalo plough. These were popular with the self-sufficiency movement in the '70s and I had expected to find a website of enthusiasts who could give more information.  Alas no. Does anyone here have any experience or know here I could look for more info?

Thanks.

Barry

We  used a jalo more like in the 60's.It was very hard work as we had stoney ground. We had to give up with it.. Its probably all right if the soil had been previously dug over, perhaps in the autumn and needed turning over in the spring.Good for earthing up the spuds.A bit too hard for me these days . I'd rather a spade.

yep sounds like hard work to me too,and wouldnt you tread on your cultivated soil as you go unless you walk like john wayne .i have to save my energy for 30 mile bike hikes up those welsh hills in the rain  8)
feed the soil not the plants

they`re very good for big areas, but a `lotment too small, i think.
one or two folk have them around here, and they seem to get on with them ok.
as for the hand mower, you cant beat them for quality of finish, no petrol or ellastic trickery use either!

They are best used with the Hoe blades.

with some careful planning when spacing rows, it should make your life easy. my uncle has one that he wont part with!!!!!!!
