Best type of pots/containers
« on: August 06, 2020, 11:05 »
Whilst I do love the look of terracotta, I have had some casualties over the winters.   I want to plant some Hebe Globes.    What do you think are the best materials for containers that will survive any winter rain and frosts.    Thank you,  Mrs Bouquet

I reckon a few large, light brown plastic pots are the answer, Mrs B!

Some years ago, we started buying a few terracotta pots of varying sizes, and now, a lot of them have perished in all the winter months they've had to survive!

Somewhere, a guy like Monty Don said that a decent plastic pot will do the business, and I think he's right - they weigh much less, get a certain 'patina' (dirty colour), and last for years!

When all our terracotta ones have gone, (not the glazed green ones funnily enough, they seem to be in a world of their own), we'll stick to these plastic ones - they look the same anyway!

Thanks for your answer Growster.  I am sure you are right and some sort of plastic is the way to go.  There are ones that look like oak barrels, and lead, etc,  I think I shall invest in some new terracotta plastic so that the Hebe green looks a good contrast.    If I buy dark colours, the Hebe may not show.    I was worrying about how I can move these pots.     Thanks again,  Mrs B

You can get good fibre glass pots made to look like lead in traditional styles, not cheap but will last. Or maybe look online for some with water reservoirs to save you a job.

Thanks, when it cools down, I shall go to a big G.C, I know, where they sell all sorts, so I shall check them all, including water reservoirs.    Mrs B
