Pot saucers
« on: April 07, 2013, 18:10 »
Hi chaps ... before I ask my question please why was I only able to find the "start new topic" button on this forum please ?

Anyway - to my dilemma, I have some 12" plastic pots - maybe 12 or more that I want to transplant my tomatonand pepper seedlings into, then put them onto a 'deck' so I need some saucers but looking around they can cost a fortune, does anyone have any economical solutions (my wife will have to approve the acceptabilty of the 'look' of the things) !

Many thanks Roger

Have a stroll around your local trading estate / business park.  There are usually / always white plassie buckets in skips and if you are lucky go to the reception and ask if you can spirit them away.  Then carefully cut the bottoms off to the depth you require.  It's all lateral thinking, "what else looks like what I need" ::)

Cheers,   Tony.

You can make rather fetching wooden troughs out of pallet wood to whatever size you like, and lined with plastic can look just the business. A tough of wood stain and they can even match your decor  ;)

I use the plastic trays that meat comes in but they are not really decorative for the patio - I use them in the green house

You could use the large trays for growbags, or cat litter trays. Get a few pots on each.

Get into 'Go Noodles', they are a spicy thai noodle soup snack. Buy a tray or two. Easily made and tasty too! Available in Tesco. Much much nicer  than pot noodles.

The pot lids make excellent saucers.

I used to buy cheap pretty plates at car boots for some of mine.  The big deepish ones for soup are good.

That's so helpful one and all ... until I find something better there are some 'Utility Trays' in our local 99p shop that take two pots (these are big ones for tomatoes) ... the only problem is they're a bit brittle ... we'll see.

I go to second hand shops and buy big plates.. They don't keep as much water as the official ones but they do the job.. And I think it looks nice but that depends on your taste and the rest of your interior.

Depending on the size and number of pots you want to put out...99p stores have a black plastic car boot liner which will take quite a few pots.

Edit to add:
I've also just seen the green planting mat at £1-land, which might look prettier.
