hi all,

just curious -  can I use water that's been sterlised with VWP ( or similar ) be safe for using in the garden ?

When I do a beer run, I must use something like 5-7 gallons of water that has either directly been sterilised with VWP or has been used to rinse out once cleaned. rather than just sling this down the drain, can I put it on the garden ? I don't particularly want to sterilise the soil at the same time as watering it - if I leave it stand for a while, does the VWP-ness reduce ?

Is it a chlorine based product?

If so, the chlorine will slowly be released through the water surface, and stirring will help speed this up.

I don't think I would add this directly to the soil without knowing what chemical it is that makes it a steriliser/stain remover

I have a pot of this product and whilst it doesn't give a full breakdown of ingredients, it contains 20% phosphates and 6.5% chlorine based bleaching agent.

mmm, cool, so sounds like I can leave it in an open container for a few days, the chlorine should evaporate ( or what ever the correct technical term for that would be ) and then I'd just have some phosphate rich water

think I'm gonna have to try on a patch somewhere and see how it does - I guess if it goes 'kill' the soil I've got something to create a sterile potting medium
