Green Manure - Grazing Rye - Too Late?
« on: October 04, 2012, 14:00 »
I'm thinking of broadcasting some Winter Grazing Rye on one of our plots when the weather allows. Considering I'm in North Yorkshire and it was down to 3 degrees this morning I'm just wondering if the time has passed. Searches on tInternet give conflicting advice. Seed packet recommends sowing in Feb - Mar and Aug - Nov.

Can anyone offer any advice please as I've never tried Grazing Rye before?

Thanks in advance,
Paul.

If it says up to Nov on the packet give it a go. At worst you will waste a couple of quid but next year the seed might be less viable anyway.

I planted some at the weekend, so I would have said it was worth a go.

Thank you all for the replies. I'm going to give it a try when (if?) the weather allows.

You can sow grazing rye until the Winter sets in properly and the soil gets cold.

The earlier you sow it the better it will be established and the faster it will get away in the Spring. It will start into growth at the first hint of Spring which is why farmers grow it to give their cattle some early green feed.
