green manure to sow late October?
« on: October 07, 2011, 13:34 »
our rotavator is off to the rotavator hospital at the weekend. we're hoping to get it back next weekend, and go over our lottie. plan was to sow green manure over (nearly) the whole plot then rotavate that in in the spring.

we have quite heavy clay soil (improved by 3 years off digging homemade and mushroom compost each spring), that we'd like to improve further (hence the green manure).

however, all the green manure seeds that i've seen advertised say sow at latest late September

is there anything that i could sow at the end of this month to cover the plot (and at least keep weeds down) over winter please?

thank you!

Maybe this would work for you?

http://www.greenmanure.co.uk/field_beans.htm

I`m trying to find some bulk green manure sites,or thinking about growing my own peas and beans to sow. They are soooooo expensive in small amounts.

These ppl sell in bulk.I haven`t checked it all out yet, only found the site this morning.:)

I grew field beans one year. They were very hardy and then in the spring they had lovely purple flowers, which the bees loved... So they were a bit tricky to dig in but I'd recommend them
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
