Title: elephant garlic

I am getting some elephant garlic and my soil is sodden at the moment. I have started the normal garlic in pots. Could I do the same with the elephant and would the 12" florist pots be ok to start them and leave a couple to grow on in?

Thats what i've done and they are getting their roots now... Will plant out later on when they get their shoots growing or may wait till early spring - I'll keep them out in the cold if I do this..

You could also dig in a little sand around where they will go, if your soil is very wet, and then when you plant the cloves, sit them on a spoonful of soil in the bottom of the hole

If you are going to grow them in pots forst, think about adding sand to you compoast and putting some underneath them in the pots too, as this will help when they go out in the ground.

In twleve inch pots them will do very well -- just remember they do not need to be kept warm. As gavin said, he will be putting his outside  ;)

Thanks for the replies,
I was hoping they would be ok in the buckets, just wanted to make sure. I will probably just keep them in buckets to try get more shallots into the bed

dmg - I'd use one per bucket for the EG if you are leaving them there to grow as they need loads of space because they are a big garlic..

Except that they are not really a garlic.

They are a close relative of the leek, hence the mild flavour, which can leave some people disappointed if they were expecting garlic flavour. That's why I only grew them once!
