What flower seeds should I order?
« on: November 06, 2009, 14:42 »
Ok peeps, it's that great and exciting time of year when we dream about what we want to grow and order too many seeds from the suppliers.

Next year I want to make my plot more attractive to 'good' wildlife and less attractive 'bad' wildlife as well as giving a pleasing floral/herbal display by underplanting/interplanting/catch-cropping with flowers/herbs etc.

So what varieties should I choose (and why).

I'm going to give nasturtians a go beneath the broad beans to 'trap' the black fly, and marigolds although I'm not sure if there are any particular varieties to try.

Ideas please!

Regards,

SS

I always grow cornflowers, calendula and gypsophila in my veg garden just because they look so wonderful.
One year we held even song in our hay barn and I picked great bunches of cornflowers to decorate it .  Its was a beautifully warm and still evening and they looked so lovely, better than the most expensive orchids  :)

I had lovely nasturtiums this year - tasty in salads and no black fly on them - unlike the broad beans they were next to and supposed to protect!

I also put marigolds and tagetes among thye carrots - but that didn't keep the carrot root fly off either.
I'm just going to plant nice flowers now - OH reckons he saved more money on not buying flowers all summer, than we saved on the veg bill!
trying to be green except when blue
