I'd go for some form of leaf miner as well 'possibly'.

Cheers,   Tony.

My initial thought was snail or slugs, so I have been sprinkling slug pellets and ground egg shells around plant, but haven't seen any signs of deadens.    Are they able to eat a hole in the middle of a leaf.   I am upset it is one of my favourites.  thanks,  Mrs B

Yes, they can it's because whatever has eaten it has sometimes just grazed on the top layer, and not gone all the way through that I think 'snugs'
Most everything else starts from an edge and works their way in. Leaf miners tend to leave white line trails as they move under the surface...
Once it gets dark go and have a look to see if you can see the culprits ;)

I have given it another inspection, and I do go out in the dark to look under plants etc.    Today , now I am looking there are lots if squiggley meanderings across the leaves.   I have gently tickled the soil around the plant and refreshed slug pellets.  I have also given each leaf a spray with general instectiside.    I don't think I have seen the squiggles before in the garden, but perhaps I just assumed snails/slugs.
On the backs of the leaves where there is a hole, on some of them there is a little but of black stuff.
Thanks all for your help.    Mrs Bouquet
