Shallots Sprouting ?
« on: December 29, 2008, 14:31 »
Hi would i expect to see my over wintering shallots sprouting already?

The reason for it i have 3 lots of shoots  (3-5 chive like shoots per shoot) coming through, but I thought my chickens had run away with them .
Graham = 2x Border collie Dogs, 2x Cats, 1x Wife, 2x Kids, 2x Hamsters and now 10x chickens.

Don't do overwintering shallots i but put my garlic in, in november and this sprouted ages ago..........about 5inches tall now. So i'm sure that it's ok for your shallots to be sprouted.

I've not put overwintering shallots this year (ran out of time) but my plot neighbours ones have not sprouted yet.  Just depends on local weather I'd think.

Hi,
Same here, mine are not sprouting yet, I've taken a bit more care in storing them this year, they are hanging in a string sock to get plenty of air and also light. It's in the garage which keeps nice and cold too.
Cheers,

Wayne.

My onions and garlic are both sprouting and have been for ages.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I think we are talking about over-winter shallots etc. that have been planted.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I was worried about my garlic, I planted on 13th November, must have been 4 weeks with nothing then last week it all came up :)

I have shallots (golden gourmet) which I plant in early spring, which variety do you have? Looking back I cropped out my shallots in July this year so I wondering how early you get yours or whether the benefit is just bigger bulbs?
