spindly carnation seeds
« on: April 05, 2012, 18:10 »
I wonder if anyone can offer any advice on my poorly carnation seedlings. they are getting plenty of water and about 6 hours of sunlight. I've never grown them before and am not sure what i am doing wrong? When i transplant them can i cover some of the stem with compost to make them a little studier? Some of them are literally falling over.

They look as though they might have been a bit too wet (carnations can cope with dryish conditions).

When you say six hours of sunshine a day, where are they?

You can plant them up to their seed leaves when you transpant them, which will help them stand up stright, but if the conditions aren't right, they will continue to grow spindly.

They are in my kitchen on the windowsill. They were bone dry earlier which had caused a few of them to collapse. they are in seedling compost.

I think that despite the sunshine, they are not getting enough light.

They need a reflector to increase the level of useable light, as they have become spindly stretching towards the window I think
