Job for a plumber or is it an easy enough job?

I bought an outside tap kit, the appropriate sized drill bit and fitted one myself.  Not that difficult.  My only moment of concern was using the cutting thingy to make a hole in the pipe.  Again, not a problem once I'd done it.

I got a plumber in, but with stone walls to 2ft it would have been a nightmare without the proper drill and bits. It cost £76 fixed price and is metal piping instead of hosepipe as with the kits and can also be turned it off when the weather is very cold so no freezing problems with it.

I done quite a few of these ... its so easy , the only thing you need is a 18" mason drill bit or longer , drill from the inside of the house to the outside ... this is incase you hit a mains pipe drilling from the outside in

If you drill from inside to out you run the risk of blowing the face off the brick.

Then one should drill outside and one should drill inside until they meet in the middle.

Yes Lardman that is possible if you dont take it nice a slow coming through to the outside , as i've said i've quite a few of these and never done any damage to the outside brick

Got an inside tap connector for now. Getting some work done to back of house will get the outside tap sorted then

Just another thing ... make sure you tap into the pipe after the stop cock , this way if you get a leak you can turn the water off

Daves point is very true- our outside tap comes off before our stopcock......

Mr Bodger who built out house managed some real classics like that- bit like me moving some gravel a few days ago and finding the main water pipe only 3 inches down- that feeds us and our nice neighbours too- must lag it before winter!- amazingly it didnt freeze last winter!
