In the UK Sodium Chlorate is legal to sell until 30 September 2009, and legal to use until 10 May 2010.  There is always a delay between the EU Commission Decision and subsequent Directives, and national implementation.

May be it is approved to be used for cleaning roofs etc. Unless the packet says killing weeds in gravel you cannot legally use it. Jeyes fluid has much the same problem.

I use a flame-thrower to keep the weeds down in the gravel.  IF they get ahead of me I spray them with Glyphosate / Roundup - whatever is cheapest - and then burn them off when they have died.

It is approved for use as a herbicide on land not to be used for cropping crops, until May 2010.  After that date its use is not permitted at all, as far as I know.

how about using a flame gun ? either the old parafin type, or i use a large gas one, it is actually a roofing gas blowtorch, connected to a 13kg gas cylinder, there is not much that it cannot burn away, slugs, woodlice, snails...

Vinegar Weed Killer Recipe

• 120 mls (4 ounces) Lemon juice concentrate

• 1 liter (1 quart) white or cider vinegar

 Simply mix the two ingredients together in a spray bottle and you have your organic weed killer formula.
Spot spray it directly on the weeds, being careful not to spray desirable plants. For the most effective result the best time to spray in during the heat of the day.
