Tomato and potato blight
« on: March 19, 2009, 22:18 »
After losing loads of toms last year to blight (We were at my cousins for just a week and came back to very poorly plants) I want to be prepared this year.
I have bought the anti blight stuff (box is in the garage, I can´t remember the name of the sachets)  Would it be better  water the plants with the mixture soon?  The spuds are a couple of inches high and the toms went in this evening.  We have no blight ´weather´at the moment, it is just very dry and hot.
Don´t know when I will be called back to the UK (MIL ill) so I don´t want to leave it to chance-  the neighbour believes in leaving the plants to recover on their own, so I don´t want to ask them to look after the plants for me.
So when shall I spray?
Pamela

I only spray in Kent when weather indicates I should, about July here..if at all.
Found this don't know if it will help

Quote
Spraying every 10-14 days using protective fungicides based on mancozeb or copper will prevent the disease from spreading. Since these sprays prevent but do not cure blight, you need to cover all the foliage, every time you spray. As blight is a problem most years, it is worth starting to spray regularly from early July.

In bad years you can only expect spraying to prevent blight partially, but aim to keep the foliage going long enough for tubers to swell.

going by that, then, you need to work out when you get july weather over there.
if it's warm and sunny (   ) here , july should be between 20 ans 30degrees c.

Last year we got blight late May early June the year before it was midApril- May.  I´ll wait till the rain is due then go mad with the spray then.  I just hope the neighbour will spray the plants for me if I get called back to the UK.
Thanks for the replies
