A trip out of London resulted in me procuring some class A horse manure ( not the sorry straw laden stuff the council delivers here ). Should I wait till late winter to put it under the rose bush ( the idea being I don’t want to encourage growth now) . Or would it be ok to spread it now? Thanks for any advice.

We have quite a big rose hedge which was planted about two and a bit years ago. What we did was to spread horse manure around the roses in spring, making sure the manure didn't touch the stems as it was not all well-rotted. Seems to have worked well as we had a lovely show this summer. I added rose fertiliser as well but think I did it a month later - not sure.

Not until the horse has passed it!  And then wait a good few months...
