Can pickling spices be used more than once?
« on: December 15, 2022, 09:55 »
Good morning everyone, a simple request to Gurgle, yet it hasn't answered the question.

"How to re-use the pickling vinegar, more pickling recipies, re-using the brine".

Why (for the first time) can they answer the simple question?

Which Santa is the frustratedest?

Follow on question, how to clear the resultant pickling vinegar, without having to rent a centrifuge!?

Cheers,  Tony.

I'd say no you cant reuse the pickling vinegar/spices.
Moisture from the veg/fruit from the first use will now be in the fluid, so the mix will have lower acidity, so probably won't act as a  preservative for the next batch - you may get mould growth in your pickles.
If you insist on reusing the brine let it run through a couple of layers of muslin.

The question is can I re-use the spices, (not the spicy vinegar).
Well the used spices are in a jar in the fridge, I shall monitor during the year(s).

Cheers,  Tony. ;)

I keep the vinegar from all sorts of bought pickles, as I have a 'theory' that I can eventually 'zap' all the various chutneys I've made over the years and add some chillis etc, to make a 'super-sauce'...

There's absolutely no science involved, the chutneys are all OK in their own way, but the several half-full jars seem to dry out with mis-use, so I'm rationalising the space!

I'll let you know in a year's time...

Regarding just the spices:

If you attempt to use them again, you will get less flavor out of the spices, and into what you are trying to flavor.  This is sort of like trying to re-use tea bags or coffee grounds that have already been used.  :nowink:
Probably will result in unsatisfactory results. You might also introduce unwanted mold or bacteria into the second batch.
