As the heatwave is passing now things will be easier for outdoor tasks. Itís been a pleasant break though Ė about as near to a holiday as weíre getting this year, for sure.

[ Hello everyone, fellow growers! this year i have been growing Red Alert toms i have grown them before, but when they ripen there is always a small unripened green patch even though the tom is ready to eat so i am leaving them to try to get the tom to ripen entirely, this happens every time i grow this variety, have any other growers had this prob?:mellow:size=10pt][/size]

Off the top of my head I think thatís called green back & is a deficiency of something, give it a google & see what you come up with, you could always start a new thread of it where you might get a more definitive answer

Greenback is where the top of tomato around the stalk remains hard and remains green, refusing to colour. The main cause is a lack of potash but itís more common in hot, sunny years so using shading in the greenhouse will help. Many varieties of tomato do not suffer from it.

You're right, Snows, a quick Google comes up with 'green shoulders'!

I'm still looking at our 'Shirley' toms, which, while they're beginning to ripen, some have small green spots on the skin. The inside is just fine, and they taste OK!

I might try 'Red Alert' next year, as I originally thought they were just an old - nearly Heritage - tom, but looking at their spec, they could take over from 'Sungold' as a nice early cropper! Trouble is, they're a bush type, so may muck up the GH somewhat...
