The photo's are of a system that worked very well for last years peppers and chillies. Only I changed this year because it brought the height up too much and hindered growth. Anyway the polystyrene tray about 6 foot long and 4 inches deep was found at the rubbish site. I lined this with plastic and a few dobs of silicone to keep it in place. The builders bucket sat on top of a length of fascia board type stuff, again from the rubbish. Only cost was 5 builders buckets with a strip of high absorbency material that's used in the kitchen etc.

Is there a benefit using wicking fabric over the systems that use growing medium as the point of contact with the water chamber?

I believe so - the capillary matting delivers moisture throughout the pot and growth seems much improved.
