Lidls, Fruit trees and bushes
« on: January 26, 2008, 18:07 »
Hello,

We went to Lidl's today as we had seen that they were selling fruit trees, and bushes. We have got ourselves a lovely cherry tree, with little buds on it, three blackcurrent bushes, a gooseberry bush, and two redcurrant bushes. The fruit bushes were only 99p each, and the trees were £3.99 I think. The tree is about six to seven foot tall, and has a great rootball on it, we already have apple, pear, and plum trees, but we thought a cherry would be nice.
They were also selling what they called mini greenhouses, for herbs, at 69p each so we bought some of those too. We also got some Kohlrabi seeds, being a german supermarket they are bound to have those I suppose.

Years ago when I was a chef, I worked in a residential home which had been run by a german couple, they grew their own veg and herbs, and the residents were fed what was grown. When I started to work there, the residents asked me not to cook the Kholrabi anymore, and to give them swede or turnips, parsnips anything but that particular veg really. I have to say I loved it, but I suppose if you were given it at nearly every meal, you would get a bit tired of it. I am going to have a bash at growing it, should be interesting!!

ooh, now every one is rubbing in the deals at Lidls (see my little sulk in frugal living).

I got a free packet of Khol rabi from T&M, haven't a clue what it tastes like but will give it a try.

How do you cook it?  I thought it was just grated in salads.

they are nicer flavour, raw, IMHO, but if you stuff them, yay! :tongue2:

I got a free apple tree from Copella, and a muscat grape vine from Woollies for £3.99. Both now have their roots in water ready for planting out somewhere in the garden tomorrow.

I've been effectively signed off by the physio, so feel I can tackle digging a small hole or two.

And the garlick's coming up nicely, and the rhubarb's sprouting well.

Feel like everything's been on hold and I can finally start doing stuff again.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

I bought a Philadelphus from lidl's today because the flowers look nice  - didn't know it was a mock orang! - I hope it grows - it looks beautiful.
Bought a gooseberry too.

Can I plant them now?
