Looking after the lilies?
« on: January 26, 2008, 12:50 »
I love lilies! Last year I grew from a bulb Lilium Asiatic 'Olivia' and it was absolutely beautiful when it bloomed and had such a lovely scent. When it died, if left just this brown stalk and obviously I'm hoping it will bloom again this year so my question is this: do I cut the stalk, or just leave it? Thanks!

I cut mine back after they've died off. It should flower for you again, no problems :D

You're welcome :D

Do you get lily beetles in Yorkshire?

I never had a problem with them where we lived in England until we moved in with my mother in law (while we were sorting out buying this house) - it was only about 5 miles away but all of a sudden I had lily beetles on all my lilies :x

In a word.... yes!

My lilies were totally decimated by the lily beetle last year. I'm going to keep vigilant this year as apparently if you keep on top of them as soon as they start to appear yoa are able to control them.

I was picking 10-12 off my plants per day! Some of them didn't even flwer last year, the infestation was that bad  :(

Keep checking the ground, about 1/2" (1cm) deep, below the plants. That's where they like to hide in the winter/spring until they're ready to come out. And do clear out all dead matter below the lilies as well. Doesn't cure the problem but it definitely helps minimize it.

I'm glad we don't have lily beetles over here; nasty things.

The adult beetles look so lovely though

Spooky..... I was gonna ask the same question today!!!!

I went out to look at my lilies in pots on the patio and there is new growth at the bottom even though the old stems are still there, still quite green! I thought I had read somewhere that you the old stems would die down but mine seem happy to stay there all winter!!!!

I might just cut them down then  :)

Oh no! I didn't even know there was such a thing as a 'lily beetle'  :( thanks for mentioning it, though - now I know to look out for them! What do they look like, and what do I do about them? Do I just pick them off the plants if they appear?

Just went down the garden centre yesterday and bought even more lily bulbs for this year - two 'lollypops' and two 'olivia' - to go in my garden and allotment. I hope they come up as well this year as they did last year.

The beetles themselves are quite pretty - bright red shiny beetles, their grubs are kind of weird; they cover themselves in their own poo ( :? ) and look like bird droppings or much on the leaves.

They do alot of damage but you'd know if you had them...

The beetles are very pretty, like Selkie says, bright red, very exotic looking.
They are also very clever. When you approach them to pick them off, they drop off and lay on their backs on the soil so you can't see them (their undersides are dark).

Little blooming swines they are.........

I dug my lilies up from the garden, as apparently they're toxic to my many feline visitors, and am going to put them in pots on the flat roof instead.

I couldn't bear to kill them directly so I used pick them all off (the babies too) and put them up the other end of the garden
