Tomato blight question, yet again.
« on: July 21, 2015, 21:11 »
Sorry to bother you all with a question I must bring up every year or so but my neighbour on the allotment has planted loads of tomatoes on his patch and has just pointed out what he suspects may be incipient blight on two of his plants. I think it might be a mineral deficiency or erratic watering(he has been using mainly just mulch to keep them moist (we don't have a lot of water on the allotment), as the leaves are perfectly OK.  Anyway, I promised I would post a picture to see what you experts think.

Thank you in advance for your opinions.

Anton

Pic isn't the clearest, but I can't see anything that looks like blight  :unsure:

Thanks for your answer. Sorry about the quality. Here is a slightly larger picture.

P.S.  I am getting a bit confused trying to add another attachment. I hope this works out!

Sorry to start a new post on the same question but the attachment function was taking me around in circles. Can you see the slightly brownish patches on this larger picture?

Is it just a few patches on the lower leaves?

I think it's just one brownish leaf but the sort of leaf you get on all plants, even in the early growing stages.

There's nothing that looks like blight to me, just pinch out the leaves - would be my advice, if they worry him.

Thanks Mumofstig and thanks for sorting out my problems with the pictures. So the brown patches are nothing to be concerned about?

I third that motion!  Could it be sun or wind burn on the leaves do you think?

Thanks for your answer. It's not the leaves my neighbour is worried about it's the brownish blotches on the fruit!

Two points:

1) I've never known blight start on the fruit - in my experience it always hits the foliage first;
2) Is there any blight reported in the area or on anything else around and about?

It could just be 'Ghost spot', where the fruit has been splashed a bit too much, and a slight mould has formed.

It's not fatal, just not that pretty to look at!
