Clover on my lawn
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:42 »
About 1/3 of my lawn is covered in clover and other weeds like dandelion, dock and creeping buttercup. I used a complete 4 in 1 treatment 3 weeks ago which claims to give me thicker tougher grass, 7 day greening, kill weeds, kills moss. It has made some of the weeds look a bit less healthy, done nothing to improve my grass and not done anything to the clover.
Pack says
Nitrogen 14%
Ammoniacal Nitrogen 11.5%
Ureic Nitrogen 2.5%
Potassium oxide soluable in water 5%
0.49 % w/w MCPA
0.29% w/w mecoprop-P
16.3% w/w ferrous sulphate (anhydrous)granular formulation (GF)

I do not understand what all those chemicals do.

Can anyone recommend anything that will do the job better?

Yours is a typical lawn feed (nitrogen and potassium), weed (MCPA and Mecoprop-p), and moss killer (ferrous sulphate.)

Can't really do any better than post THIS LINK to an excellent RHS article on the subject.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

It will take a bit more time to see the difference, so just wait and see what happens.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think 6 weeks is the yardstick. It's so hard to be patient when your lawn  is a state. You should see mine!  :(. I treated it a while back and have just given it a good raking with the electric raker. It's looking better now but I will put weed killer down again in September and see what I'm left with then!

Thanks for the link JayG. and thanks everyone for your replies. I will rake half of it this afternoon I cannot do all of it at once. Mine is a human powered rake.

I've just invested in the electric raker as I have now decided that I don't have the time to rake 2 lawns manually...that, and I haven't the energy any more. :(. Tempus fugit and all that!

Our lawns are not big enough to warrant an electric rake  :( and it is just another piece of equipment to find somewhere to store

Just less than an hour and I have raked the front lawn, about 16ft by 10 ft. I got about 8 big buckets full of rubbish from it. Then I mowed it to pick up the remainder of the rubbish, even though I mowed it yesterday. It looks a bit better now :)

I have a specific clover-killing substance called Clovotox, works every time, but I've not seen it on the garden-shop shelves for ages so am assuming that the bureaucrats in Brussels have outlawed it along with creosote and countless other useful preparations

I think it's a shame you are nobbling the clover in your lawns. Bees love clover in the lawn and that will keep them going for ages. Just watch for a bit and watch how many bees will be visiting it

I keep my clover patches unmowed so they can fill their boots.  I can mow it when they've moved off it later on

I do this on my plot too where I have a "lawn"

No wonder bees are struggling so much  :(

Clover is lovely in the right place and that is not on our lawn. There is a huge sports field near by where it can grow and spread all it wants.
