lawn and coffee grounds
« on: December 26, 2013, 22:03 »
The lawn in my back garden is very boggy and needs help with drainage.
I intend to fork over the lawn and fill with coffee grounds as I can get an unlimited supply, will this work as well as sharp sand and time wise should it clear it by spring time?

Thanks

Sharp sand would be great but really not sure about the coffee grounds

I've never heard of coffee grounds being used, but I'd be cautious.

They are quite acidic, I think, and will retain moisture rather than provide good drainage.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have decided to go with the sharp sand as I didn't think of the grounds retaining the water, duh
Jezza, I'm unsure why the grounds boggy we only moved in on September, we are nowhere near any rivers etc and we are the top of a slight hill, I am hoping the lawn just needs aerated.

What is your soil like - i.e. clay? Even if it is, being on a slight hill should help with drainage. You haven't got a leak from your house inlet or outlet water pipes that go under your lawn or nearby have you?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hi GG,
The soil is heavy clay as for water pipes I am unsure but all our houses are on a curve so that the back gardens are all adjacent to each other with access only from each house.
I have started today using the sharp sand so hopefully will help it to break the clay up.
