square foot gardening in our big PT?
« on: November 18, 2013, 20:25 »
Hi,

Looks like we'll have 8 raised beds each 4 foot by 8 foot.  There's nice decent sized paths with clippings between the beds and all along one side 54ft I've put staging for propagating/sowing seed etc.

Has anyone tried square foot gardening in a PT? I like the look of it and will definitely do at least one bed for the kids but I'm now wondering about doing the lot using SFG.

Any opinions gratefully received.

Adri

Hi Adri, we don't have a poly tunnel, but we do have an outdoor square foot-ish (sort of) bed.  We've got quite a few main beds, but this little bed got us back into growing veggies while taming the veggie part of the garden and we've kept it   I think a square foot patch is great for kids ... I like it too, I admit ... (old photos)

(this one was showing junior about quick crops i.e. white turnip and radish versus cabbage) in the same place.

I like square foot growing as it's taught me a lot about using space ..... But this is then possible by intercropping on main beds e.g growing radish along a line of carrots, lettuce between brassicas etc.   I'll probably always keep one bed as square foot, just because it's interesting to experiment how intensively you can grow - I'm a fan - but I wouldn't turn all my beds over to square foot - though intercropping yes.  For kids and those with small spaces it's a winner  :D

Can't help in polytunnels though

Harlow Carr went into this at length as part of the GW programme I think and the finished results were published online and you can go and see it. They published their planting schemes which will give you some inspiration as they researched suitable varieties for this small space growing.  It's very interesting I think and it could become addictive

Well done for having a go. Lovely photos there  :)

It is definitely very interesting CQ, which is why our wee SF bed gets kept as it is. I've not read much mention on it on here, I guess understandably so.  It's taught me a lot about possibilities and sometimes throwing the rule book out the window and experimenting.  It is slightly (very) addictive to see a small space work and grow a variety of crops
