Cucumbers and salmonella

I just heard that there has been another salmonella incident connected with cucumbers, this time involving cucumbers imported from Mexico and mainly (as far as I know) involving the US.

As I'm just starting the process of of getting myself a polytunnel, and plan to grow cucumbers eventually (perhaps not this season), I'm wondering if there are any precautions that growers like myself should be taking when growing cucumbers, and other crops that might be problematic. Or is this only a problem that applies to large scale commercial growers?
