baling twine for munty frame
« on: April 22, 2013, 12:50 »
Can anyone point me to a place where I can get small amounts (less than 450m) of baling twine to use on my new Munty-Frame-To-Be?

Fleabay and other interweb searches all throw up 8-spool minimum orders.

Thanks!

You may be able to get it from a country or agricultural store although I appreciate that these places may be few and far between in your location. You may also be able to approach a farmer but again this may be difficult for you.

Does it matter if it has already been used and not one continuous piece?
Sometimes you have to accept that somedays you are the pigeon and somedays you are the statue!

It doesn't matter at all. I'm very lucky because my Dad is a farmer and he saves me the twine as he cuts it off the round bales of silage and straw. I then recycle it by joining it together and trimming the knots as required. Furthermore each individual piece of twine is fairly long (especially off the larger straw bales) so it's not as time consuming as it may sound.

Argh - sorry, this was a bit pre-emptive it turns out.

My local 99p stores has new stock on Mondays. This Monday it included small reels of baling twine, 2 for 99p. Munty frane can now be constructed - apologies!

No problem Surbie, that's good news. At least you can get yourself sorted out now.

I'm curious about the baling twine for the munty frame,  have you used this before and why this particular twine for the frame?  This is the second year for my munty and I'm not sure what is best to string mine with this year.

I've never built a munty frame so I'm no expert but I guess it does not really matter how you bind the frame together so long as it works for you. I guess you could even bind it together with thin wire if you wanted to.

Personally if I was building a munty frame I'd use baling twine simply because I have easy access to it, it's free, it's very strong and it's waterproof.

I think the coir string/twine gets weaker as the year goes on when it needs to be stronger later in the season with all the bean growth hanging on it IYSWIM... that's my personal take on it. The polypropylene twines don't deteriorate much at all, I find  :)

I've gone through most of the posts on Munty frames on here and there are lots of recommendations for baling twine. Mostly because it's strong and it lasts. I want to put gherkins on mine, as well as beans, and that increases the weight on the strings & frame.

Thank you for your thoughts on the baling twine - they were really useful.  My next question is the same as Surbie100's original one,  where can you buy smallish quantities from?  No 99p shops close to me!

I used natural twine the first year on my frame and it literally fell apart from sun and rain  >:( Since then I've used only baling twine and never been disappointed. Because I get so much sun here, the UV rays deteriorate the poly twine faster so I replace it every 3 years (which is better than every year with natural stuff).

I know, I know....sun? Yes, we get lots here.

You dont have to be from the wrong side of the river to get hop string :-)

http://www.essentiallyhops.co.uk/acatalog/Hop_Plants.html

Personally I use this, but then I run my beds SFG and use it as a cats cradle to mark out my squares, trip up the cats and put the pigeons off. if I get two years out of it I'm happy.
