Fitting a tap to IBC
« on: December 03, 2012, 22:44 »
I've got hold of an ibc for use on the allotment but it has no tap or hole at the bottom.

So what would people recommend to use to fit a bog standard tap? Plastic or brass fittings...?
And where would be best to fit it? In the recess where the valve would normally be...?

I was expecting to have to one of those but there is no valve to fit it to.

I'll need to drill the tank to fit the tap and use somekind of tank connector. But I don't know a lot about tank fittings...

Oh had never seen them without a valve before.  I think you can get tap kits for water butts that you bore a hole in the water but and screw the tap into the hole that might work for you.  I am not sure how to post links to web site (or even if you are allowed??) but the link below has details on how to attach a tap to a water butt that isn't fitted with one.

..doesn't work for me, for the purpose you gave. Can you check it and post another one if it isn't the right one. :)

the fun bit will be getting the nut onto the tap when its inside (taping a spanner to the end of a long stick and somehow temporarily fixing the nut in the spanner seems the way forward.)

The company I work for use water bowsers. I have sometimes had to fit new taps to them, and seeing that The "old body" isn't flexable enough to get inside anymore, I use a bamboo cane which I split down one end, place the nut in the "V" and  Superglue it on. Position it in the right place, screw the tap through the hole into the nut and tighten. You may then pull the cane away as the super glue bond has failed by this time.

Or, if your not working on your own, you can get the apprentice to get inside and hold the nut as he's younger/ more flexable and dafter than yourself. ;)

There is no way I'm getting in through the 6 inch hole at the top!

Thought about a siphon but I know they always need setting up again because some air has got in and allowed to back flow... Just when you haven't got the time to mess around...

Had a look in the hardware shop- essex fitting would be easy but at £20 there a bit out of my budget. That leaves me with two options:
1. Brass tank fitting to 15 or 22mm compression fitting
2. Plastic tank fitting to speedfit connection

Both of them have a threaded section that would push through from the inside, the back nut is on the outside. So it should be reasonably easy to clamp the threaded part from the outside to tighten.

The things i'm not sure about are Brass or plastic? Compression or speedfit?

I'm not sure which would fare better in the cold etc...

I fitted the female portion (the threaded nut) onto the tap thread inside a large water butt by taping the nut to the end of a garden cane and having the memsahib manouvre it about until it lined up with the hole then inserted the tap and threaded it on then pulled off the cane.

Cheers,   Tony.

Blimey, sounds like a job for a gynecologist.

Drill the hole slightly oversize to accomodate the thread, and then glue the tap in place with a good quality 2 pack adhesive such as araldite. That should hold it.

Avoid the cheap plastic water butt taps as they can split if they freeze.
A large washer should also be placed inside and out to spread the load should the tap be accidentally knocked.
