lettuce and salads
« on: December 23, 2011, 22:10 »
I'm sorry if it's a stupid question but I've got access to a greenhouse for the first time ever(i've struggled with a tiny plastic one up to now)
Can i grow lettuce like winter density and little gem in a cold greenhouse at this time of year?

I think you'd have to germinate them indoors, as it is getting towards the coldest time of year.
(It can't possibly stay this mild all winter, can it?  ::) )
But with the cold and the low light levels they will grow very slowly, and you may not get much to eat until the light and the temps improve. It's still a darn sight sooner than you'd get them outside though ;)

Or invest in an electric propagator which can help with lots of things , ask Santa if you've been good enough.

I'd plonk a few seeds in a 1/4 tray or a 5" pot and leave them inside on a cool window sill. Lettuce seed germinate better at lower temperatures.

I agree with Paul, do NOT use an electric propagator for lettuce. They even fail to germinate outside when summer occasionally gets going.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Growing you can. Winter lettuce outside, too. You just need to set them earlier. I did a very late sowing of such crops in the gh a few weeks ago. The winter lettuce did not come up - very old seed mind, also, I am lying: I didn't; outsourced the job to my girl  - the mizuna likes are growing though. So you might get happier with oriental/Chinese leaves under these light conditions.

Try earlier next year. Established plantlets of Parella like winter lettuce are absolutely fine out their to -10C.

Well mine germinated within 48 hrs but then removed them from theheat.  I agree too much can have a bad effect.

I sowed a batch of Little Gem way back in Sep and planted in troughs at the end of the month...they're going well now but have hardly put on any growth since Nov... so as other have said if you want winter lettuce it needs sowing early

Just a catch-up, the lettuce are up too, now. To my surprise. Obviously, the not too good germination rate is due to the old seed. (Also, I think, she might have covered them too much. Psss! She did a good job, they are all coming. :))
