Some really frugal success
« on: July 30, 2007, 16:03 »
I live quite near a council tip and got chatting to one of the lads there and now they are helping me kit out my allotment. Even though I'm sure they are not supposed to.

So far I have 4 pallets (need 10) towards a 3 bin compost system, about 50 metal poles for fencing, an old wheelbarrow and a complete set of garden tools. All being in dumped by people in landfill, but really useful to me. I'm going to get the lads there a pack of beers as a thank you.

I'm officially a scavenger. Hurrah!  :D

Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

Good on you, the more "scavengers" there are in this world the better off we will all be.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Ooh Lynne, my sensible head asks "do you know how many rules they're breaking to let you have dumped stuff". Locally a guy at the depot got sacked for helping himself to a perfectly good bicycle (probably another H&S gone mad).

my real head says "woo hoo to you!"  The more that we can re use the better and if only this government would wake up to it, mind you they don't collect VAT on recycled stuff, only on new buys.

It always amazes me how gov'ts whine and carry on about costs of landfills and shortage of fill areas, yet they have scads of time to penalize people who try to recycle. Just be careful who you tell and who's around when you collect your stuff, Lynne. No point killing the golden goose.
