Butternut squash
« on: August 12, 2012, 18:03 »
Just thought would ask if anyone else are growing these?

Have had good rate of success and plants doing ok on plot but just a lot of spreading leafs etc no signs of flowers or fruits yet.
Know our spectacular summer will of played part. Just seems they are miles behind other stuff on plot just lots leaves and vines.

I'm growing the Harrier variety of BNS and I have some fruits set on it already.

I think it has a lot to do with the variety you choose to grow, some are bred for the British climate, and these stand a better chance of success, obviously, than varieties from warmer climes ;)

At some stage, only understood by Mother nature the butternut squash plant switches growth from leaves to squash, one day there aren't any, the next they're everywhere.  ::)

Give it a couple of weeks then re-check your plot.  :)

Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

If it helps, my meduim sized orange pumpkin plant and my Japanese squash plant both have a spread of easily nine square feet but my Butternut Squash is still only about 1.5 square feet around its centre and with no fruit.

I am holding out for a sudden spurt - they usually come through late when you think they are not going to come through. Hungry plants - nettle and comfrey tea helps.

I'm growing Waltham, Hunter F1 and Harrier F1 (3 of each ... I was determined to try and get more than one fruit this year!) and have to say I was starting to get worried by the slow growth and lack of fruit.  In the winter squash bed there is a mix of some doing extremely well (they seemed to relish the rain and that part of the plot was even flooded) whereas some seem to be slow and undecided like the butternut.  I'm hoping this recent burst of warm weather will perk them all up  :)

I've got 2 2-inch fruit on one of 4 plants. The other 3 aren't so bothered about fruit right now it seems.
