Coffee Grounds
« on: July 02, 2007, 18:56 »
My company has just started giving away biodegradable bags (approx 8 oz ) of coffee grounds. I could, of course, just put the bags on my compost heap but if I remember correctly they contact at least some nitrogen so I'd like to try making some liquid fertilizers with the grounds.

Has anyone done this?  If so what proportion of grounds/water would you recommend?

Would be a shame not to accept such generosity don't you think !

Yep if it's free great, I don't know what proportions you would need, you may have to experiment a bit.

Try them sprinkled on the surface as a slug deterrent.  They also help warm up the soil due to their colour.

I don't quite understand here  :?

Is this fresh 'ground coffee' they are giving away, and you are going to brew and drink it before composting, or used 'coffee grounds' which have already done their duty  :?:

<<Is this fresh 'ground coffee' they are giving away,>>

Sadly, no.    There's a large amount of used coffee grounds from around 18  coffee machines and - in their words- "As part of our commitment to a sustainable future and to help put something back, we're offering free used coffee grounds for your garden".  They're all neatly bagged up in biodegradable bags to take away with our croissants (or in my case, doughnuts).

I'll experiment with a bag to a 2 gall can seeped for a day or two and see if I can tell any difference.  Huh...with all this rain, maybe seeping is one step too far <g>

Ahhhh...what a great idea.  Do you think slugs might prefer de-caf ?

I've been chucking the coffee grounds from my shop and cafe on the compost heap for a good while now but never thought of chucking them on the soil as a slug deterrent.

What a wonderful idea!!

Liek to know more about the nitrogen thingy too??
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

I'd be interested to hear if it works against slugs since I've never had enough coffee grounds to try a full-blown test.  Perhaps the caffeine deprives them of needed sleep

Well puravida (or anyone) please?  Any reports on how successful coffee is as a slug deterrent?

I've heard somewhere they can sort ants out too...
But I'm waiting for test results.  Any bugs on caffeine sound too scary.  I'm still recovering after a slug-slaughtering session last night and am traumatised.  Mine are so big they're climbing over the slug pellets.
