What goes well with each other in the greenhouse ?
« on: January 10, 2010, 16:29 »
Hi,

I've got a large greenhouse split into 2 and I do recall reading somewhere that tomatoes and cucumbers or cucumbers and peppers or something like that should be in different sides of the greenhouse - as far as possible away from each other so I would have a humid side and moist or something similar ?

Thanks

I think they say that cucumber like more humidity, but to be honest I've never had trouble growing them all in the same conditions ::)
So that's not much help is it

That's great :) I  can put everything where I want, do you think peppers and chillis one side of one half and cucumbers on the other would be fine ?  And then the toms would get the other side to themselves by the door less draft for the cucumbrt ?

Thanks

Tomatoes need a humid atmosphere, so should be planted at the back of the greenhouse. Cucumbers need a dry atmosphere and should be planted near the door, were the ventilation is better. :D

Nope, when cucs are grown in humid conditions they soon get botrytis.

I beg to differ on this, in the early stages maybe, but when a mature plant they like humidity.

Medwyn Williams NVS siteTwo crops inside the greenhouse that need regular attention now if you are to get the optimum crop from them are Tomatoes and Cucumbers. Most gardening books will tell you that to grow tomatoes and cucumbers well they should be grown in separate greenhouses. The theory behind this is that the cucumber grows superbly well in a moist warm damp climate, so humid that when you walk into the greenhouse on a nice sunny day, your spectacles will steam up. Also, cucumbers are prone to attacks from the Red Spider Mite which spreads it's fine silky webbing across the leaves and stems and the best cultural control is to keep a moist or humid atmosphere. Conversely tomatoes, if grown under the same regime as cucumbers could be prone to disease, in particular Botrytis.
You pays your money and takes your choice here it seems.
Your plan looks ok to me Garddwr, I grow my cukes up the end wall as they can be monster then when they get to the top I train them along canes tied to the ridge. :)

Looks OK to me - are you able to partition off the cues, once established? I did it with mine last year and had a really good crop.  I just hung some bubble wrap from the roof to give them their own humid micro climate.

Thanks DD. Well I suppose I could hang bubble wrap but what to you do with watering and picking ? I should add that I had the botrytis disease last year and the advice was to ventilate so wouldn't wrapping them up and keeping them enclosed encourage botrytis again ?

Thanks

Previous years the plants have gone dry & crispy & fruit stopped setting, so you pays you money. The bubble wrap was just hung loosely, so it's easy to push to one side to water & harvest.
