No idea about clay soil, we dont get clay here, however two I have grown are Cara and Picasso.

I'm hoping to grow 'Marfona' this year if I can get hold of any. M&S sell 2 Marfona baking spuds in lots of packaging for £1.60!!!!   They are yummy though - very 'creamy' tasting. Our soil is quite heavy too.

Sounds lovely - I'm still on the hunt for my perfect baking potatoe which is not floury or waxy but melt in the mouth and almost sweet.

Here's the address to T&M for Marfonas  http://www.thompson-morgan.com/potatoes1/product/zww5043/1.html

The ones that did best for me last year for bakers were "Ambo", sadly my local nursery don't seem to have them this year.

The runners up were "Picasso", but I'm sorely tempted to risk rummaging through the Ambo sack to find some seed size ones. (Keep it quiet!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My slugs liked Isle of Jura.

Most were unusable!

DD it is OK to use your Ambo seed for a second year. This is what is called "once grown seed" in agriculture and is commonly done. You should not do it for any more than one year as you may get a build up of virus.

You should never grow from supermarket potatoes as you do not know their history.

I'm off to the garage to sort them out!

Did it once with "Sarpo Mira" when the seed spuds were really expensive. Had a brilliant crop.

Also saved some "Charlotte" last year, then forgot & went & bought some more. Still, twice as many as planned wasn't a bad thing, both crops were excellent!
