1/3 of allotment dugover so far and my back is killing

made up 2 raised borders 7&1/2 feet long by 3 ft wide filled with compost and chicken poop covered the top with landscape fabric watered in left a few days today i planted strawberries the ones B&Q were selling lora or somthing like that.
question 1 : do i cover around base with straw now or wait for them to get bigger.

2: do i need to build a wire cage over them now or will it be ok until flowers turn too fruit

I'd wait for the crop to come b4 strawing,although it will keep them clean and help moisture retention, as for nets you can do them now and be ready for the birds!
