Red Duke of York - disapointed
« on: July 09, 2012, 19:00 »
My Red Duke of York look very nice, but when I cook them the skins split and they are very floury and tastless.  Are they usually like this or is it the weather?

They are floury but are reckoned to have a good taste.
Have read that it is good to cook with the skins on as this adds colour to the meal they are part of. So it sounds as if the skins should not split.

I grew them last year and I didn't like them either. For my taste, there's just a bit too much skin for a new spud.

You could try steaming them - that can sometimes give a better result with a floury potato.

I have grown them, but think I roasted most of mine in a bit of olive oil.  They are more floury than most new potatoes but I remember them being quite good tasting.  Maybe all the rain has diluted the taste

I had this problem when I grew them in a wet summer a couple of years ago.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They make the most fantastic wedges/ little roasties... we grow some especially for this!

Others as you have said make better new/salad potatoes.

Thanks guys, perhaps it is all the wet weather.

I will try them as wedgies as Rachael suggests.
