Hi there
i have just been given a plot by my local council. ive never had one before so looking for advise as to where to start really
the grass is about 5 ft high there are raised beds under all the grass i think poss 6.
i cant post pitctures on here but here is a link to a picture i have started to cheer it this is where i am at

Hi Dan and welcome to the forum. You will be so glad you took that photo of your plot in months to come, as it is so easy to forget how tangled and overgrown things looked on Day One!
I've added a link to advice in the tabs at the top of the page (hours of happy reading there tbh) which I hope helps.
From personal experience, I would advice covering areas you are not immediately going to cultivate with light proof landscaping membrane held down with anything heavy. Weeds and grass underneath will be gone in a year's time and you can concentrate on having a productive section fairly quickly

That’s great thank you I was thinking if I get it as short as poss using a strimmer im off all week next week so will do it then.
Going to buy 2m x 25M Roll of black plastic weed cover off ebay today for £23 and cover it all with that.
There will be no planting until early jan/feb next year

Hi Dan,
If you just get a couple of beds clear you can still plant things like leeks and cabbages from a Garden Centre and even sow some beans that will give you a harvest. That will give you a good feeling of getting going, cover up the rest and then clear bit by bit over the winter and cover up again as you go. Good Luck & ENJOY

In reply to your plan, Dan, yes that would work but you would be missing out on stuff to eat!
mjg000 has already mentioned plants from garden centres, which could also include dwarf beans still (and purple sprouting broccoli and brussels sprouts), but mid September onwards is the time to plant overwintering onion sets and garlic, so have a little think about those ideas
