sweetcorn getting attacked
« on: September 01, 2015, 21:04 »
My sweetcorn is not quite ready about 45 ' A couple have had the ends shredded I think it is pigeons.  I am concerned they will start on the rest. I was wondering whether I should tie some string around the ends to make it more difficult for them to attack them. Getting really fed up with having to cover everything makes life so difficult and then you cannot get in when you need to. I think Venice has the answer giving them contraception to stop them increasing. Any ideas what to do with sweetcorn too tall to net. Thanks

I had an issue last year with mice and now cover each cob with an old sock once they've been pollinated.

I agree, my corn has been attacked every year for the last 3 or 4.  Successfully netted and covered this year and cut and stored before anything attacked.  The sock on each cob of corn should deter most attackers ( squirrels, badgers, pigeons or whatever) from taking them.  problem is that they don't just take and eat a whole cob, they snip at each and shred and scatter and leave loads all over the ground and none of them worth keeping for yourself.
