FRENCH CLIMBING BEANS
« on: April 29, 2008, 09:12 »
My french climbing beans have failed to germinate except for one!!!!  :cherry: Any ideas why this might be? I grew them in 3 inch peat pots. My runner beans are also in peat pots and doing great.
Is it too late to try another batch ?

I wouldn't worry. I had a problem with them last year and I ended up re-sowing and planting out around June or July.  I still got a decent crop although I had to wait a bit longer.  They will keep producing until the first frost.

Have you tried chitting them? You get to see their little roots and shoots grow over a couple of days, then you can throw away any that are truly duds, and plant them in your peat pots already germinated :-)

Nothing's happening with my Delinel either :/  Are they normally hard to germinate?
My broad beans sprouted in a day or two even though they are supposed to take longer. :?

No, they are very fast and easy, hence all children grow them at school. But need much warmer to germinate well, than broad beans. On 15 -20 they should come up in a few days, say a week.

Might have your climbing beans dried out more, sunnier spot, or whatever reason, Jazzy?

Also, have you put the beans in?  I know of such things happening sometimes.

Hello all
I planted some 'hot patio' seeds in pots on the 8th april and put them in the unheated greenhouse (thats still quite warm, never lower than 5 degrees) Packet says 7 - 21 days, but all my other seeds in the same greenhouse have come up early, even parsnips
Shouldnt they have germinated by now? If not should I have another go...I cant put any indoors, OH has had enough of windowsill growing :-)
Sorry if this has been asked before.....

Mine were in my conservatory, in an unheated windowsill type propagator, and hadn't done anything. I have now, following gobs advice, put them in the heated propagator.

Yes I had checked the actual bean for signs of germination by digging one up. It's amazing how well disguised little black beans are in compost!

I plant beans in a propagator too.

Dont sow too deeply and don't over water and they should be up within a week. :D
