I want to grow and sell. Any suggestions?
« on: December 23, 2011, 17:59 »
I'd like to grow a crop in a poly tunnel that I can sell on for a few pennies. Anyone got any suggestions on an easy crop to grow?

Some one suggested stuff for hanging baskets. I'm thinking tomatoes in season to the local shop. Got any ideas?

First question - is the polytunnel on your own property?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Check your contract. Mine prohibits growing for sale.

What you propose will certainly breach the terms of your allotment tenancy if it's a council plot.

It is likely to do so if it's a private site.

The definition and purpose of an allotment garden is to provide food to sustain the owner.  Not to make a profit / commercial venture even on a small scale.

On our site if you tried doing that, your tenancy would be terminated.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If I grow and take whatever it is off site then under the terms of YOUR agreement is that still prohibited?

The thinking here is my terms are probably the same terms as yours. :D

Just looked at my aggrement does not say you cant grow and sell but it does state to be used only for an allotment garden within the meaning of section 22(1) the allotment act of 1922 and for no other purpose. Not looked at this but i think it will answer your question NO  :)

To answer the question, taking the produce off site and selling it elsewhere is not generally permitted.

S.22(1) Allotments Act 1922:
The expression " allotment garden " means an allotment not exceeding forty poles in extent which is wholly or mainly cultivated by the occupier for the production of vegetable or fruit crops for consumption by himself or his family.

Although commercial selling is not specifically prohibited, you can tell what they are getting at.  Growing in order to sell is market gardening, not gardening for self-sufficiency with perhaps a little over.  Your post indicated an intention to grow specifically to sell, which is not permitted.

Assuming you establish the legality of allotment growing, or grow something at home, perennials are a really good seller as they are so expensive in the garden centres. Failing that, what about chutneys, jams or sauces made from your produce?

No, by law, you cannot grow for private sale or profit. You can sell for income for the site. And improvement thereof.

If I'm not too late to ask on this thread.  Can you sell surplus produce for charity?

If you are on a council site I wouldn't advise it.  If you're on a private site then see whether there's anything in your contract.

Sooooooo, theoretically.... if said person sold vegetables for say £150, and then same said person bought a newish greenhouse for £50, thereby improving the site.... would that then be acceptable, theoretically of course  :D
