Shaun - no magic ideas but I think our very alkaline soil suits cabbages although we have improved it a lot with manure and compost. They were planted out in November  (bought in as 4" high plants - I don't know what variety) which meant that the cabbage white butterflies had gone by then so no caterpillars this year. We had quite a mild sunny winter here this year in contrast to the last two which had temps of down to minus 12! The downside to that is that we have had to water at least every other day all through the winter up to about 2 weeks ago when the rain started.

Shaun I think I read somewhere that clubroot does not like alkaline conditions. Also the ground here has never been cultivated before so no nasties like that (yet) but there are monster ants, snakes and tarantula like spiders - its a trip to A&E if either of the last two bites you. Its not all fun in the sun!

we have two plots, one for veg and one for fruit, both are works in progress at the moment

plot 59, will be for fruit, have put raspberries in and there are 3 large gooseberry bushes at the bottom

plot 61 (and son moving his tractor- i wish it had an engine!) i am a bit behind with the digging, and i am slowly removing the grass paths.

My plot
At the start (July 2007)

and June 2008, 1 aching back, 2 packets of plasters, 3 buckets of blood & sweat and perhaps a tear later (no that was just something in my eye   )

This is my plot to be but I have no idea about a resonable size yet though.

At least it won't be as small as my small one this year

Have a look at Gary's blogspot - it's in his signature.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
