which dung is best ??
« on: November 10, 2008, 22:21 »
hi there im new around these parts could anyone please help as I am about to prepare my virgin ground this weekend coming.
Ive had some helpful feedback and Ive decided to dig off the turfs and use them to start a compost heap.
correct me if im going about this wrong,
Ill then cover down the areas with some black membrane that I aquired from work.
I know im going off track here.
the topic for this post was which dung is best  :?:
if I want to start planting next spring when do I start digging in or rotavating the chosen dung?
I am lucky enough to have a choice of dung.
Red Deer
Horse
Chicken
pheasant
none of which is rotten at this point in time.
the soil I have to work is good for about 12 /15 inches then it goes to a grey sand about 18 inches down. then a light brown iron colour still sandy in texture.
I hope I have given enough information here for a diagnosis.
many thanks to whom may reply.

I think they say that cow poo is best as the cow has 7 stomachs so the finished product is more digested and likely to container fewer weed seeds. It's very heavy though compared to say horse muck so if I had a choice I'd go for horse and compost it

I'd take any poo I could get my hands on though. Not fussy me  :D

Ahh cow dung!!  im going to have to get down the local dairy farm for that.
So by composting any dung does it kill the seeds ?
Sorry for the learner questions
I had this dung problem may time this year a only had a couple of little squares in which to plant a few potatoes and carrots,
I used chicken manure and well rotted horse manure. the potatoes came up lovely with not many weeds at all, but the carrots (planted to close to each other from seed packet) were just strangled by chick weed and other horrible srangle weeds alike,
So am I right in saying that because the chicken manure I used wasnt rotten or composted it only helped the weed seeds  thrive even more so.
so any dung / manure you use has to be well rotted because of that fact.
few now were gettin somewhere.

Here in windy Blackpool, we use top quality Donkey dung    much better than horse muck.

Aidy can be seen every weekend following the donkeys. He catches it before it hits the ground as his soil is already very sandy!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Nahh, donkey man brings it round in his wagon and drops it straight into the dung bin.  :D

when i was small my father got some elephant dung from chester zoo  :!: i cant remember that the crops that year was any better than before :?: He always said that the best was pig manure but it can be hard to get . On our allotments we get well rotted horse manure and it does a great job and its always available :D

It's best rotted.  I bung some into the dalek compo bins and it rots down really well

When I first got my plot I used freshish poo for courgettes, strawbs, cues, beans, corn and spuds (makes the spuds a bit scabby though).  I used muck on it's own but the blackbirds had a field day and scattered it all over the place in their search for worms and insects.   Stuff will grow in it though except seeds of course, for which it's too rich, but no problems with plants

I have used well rotted horse manure and got a brilliant crop from it and not many weeds.

Don't forget the chichens ... this stuff has a higher nitrogen content ... great for boosting onions in late spring, and also the leafy veg ...

And ...

Chicken manure pellets deter cats from using your flowerbeds and also feed your plants.  :tongue2: Sprinkle a few around and water them. Repeat every two weeks or so.   8)

I used to use Cow Manure on my last allotment and no complaints, however, I cant seem to find a local supplier where I live now, so I am going to use Horsey Cak for the first time. (fingers crossed)
I like the tip about chicken poo though... Will definately try that  :)

Apparently horse manure is the best, but I can;t remember where I heard that.

If you're clearing a turfed area you could try the lazy bed method. Not exactly lazy since it takes a fair bit of effort, but worked a treat on my heavy London clay.

The important thing with muck is to spread it properly i.e Left, Right and Centre!!!
