Idea for cheap plastic polytunnel/greenhouse
« on: April 30, 2012, 21:33 »
I'm about to buy one of those cheapo plastic greenhouses (6x3m) for the plot and I was thinking of using scaffold boards to clad the bottom on the outside. As I'm planning to have raised beds inside in a 'u' shape and filling the beds so that the soil from the beds pushes against the green house cover and the outer boards.

Will I need to line the greenhouse cover to prevent  the soil rotting it and would 1 or 2 courses of scaffold boards filled with soil be better to strengthen the green house against the wind?

If using the green covering which ties on, then I have found it disintergrates after a few years and the poles rust.

I had one of the small ones, but the plastic got torn, I sawa replacement cover on freecycle so got that. But it was for its larger brother, the full walk in greenhouse and of course I had no frame for that. So I built one from roofing lats, all treated timber, and built staging in it at the same time That was 5 years ago and its still going strong!

Hi all
I looked at those and decided that as i was making a raised bed for my tomatoes this year i just make a raised bed from scaffold boards and a frame from 2" x 2" timber
I then added a simple slope to the top

Painted it with shed paint and then covered it in 500gauge (thick heavy duty) clear plastic - thus making a perfect greenhouse for my tomatoes - even a door on the front

Didn't cost much more than the greenhouse would but will last longer and a lot stronger - thanks
