well at long last there are pears on out tree and they are for the most looking good , although there are a number that are not growing and have gone dark , i was wondering should we pick off the smaller darker fruit or will the tree shed them itself , we are so excited it will be the first year that all our trees have fruit .

Hi,
I'm no expert but can share what happend regularly with a pear tree I used to have in my garden. In early summer it used to shed several of the small fruit and I understand this to be natures way of dealing with any excess fruit to ensure the remainder have a better chance of ripening.
I never had to intervene and got a decent crop of fruit.

I'm no expert either, but most trees will self drop. Check a few of these fruit just to make sure, that they don't have some soft rot.
