Will this rain ever stop!
« on: February 19, 2007, 15:11 »
I am dying to get out and do stuff on my week off but all it has done is pour down :(

I need to get that darn greenhouse up so I can hide in it!!

Is there anything I could be doing indoors until the weather settles? I have already mastered making newspaper pots

You could always do what we golfers do in the rain ... get wet!

Great thanks.  Have you tried them out before?  Notable successes, notable failures?

Was sat doing a batch last night and they are pretty stury too :) keep them flat until needed! and just plant straight into soil if need be!

I found a much simpler method - perhaps here - or on  another forum - or SOMEWHERE....

Anyway - claiming no credit for myself - this is it:

Take one newspaper sheet.  Tear neatly in half across the middle so you use only half a page for each pot.

Fold in half again (torn edge meets bottom of page).

Then take a cardboard loo roll inner and roll the sheet around the loo roll so that the folded edge is about 1/2 cm from one edge.  (ie the cardboard of the loo roll is sticking out 1/2 cm.)

The other end of the loo roll has extra paper.

Take the extra paper at the bottom and twist it like the end of a sweetie wrapper.  Then push it into the bottom of the tube a little to make the floor of the pot.

Pull the loo roll out and VOILA!

If you end up with too much paper at the bottom an extra fold at the top before rolling will produce a tidy pot.

Plant the whole pot once your seeds have grown (it works well for beans I understand), but be sure not to leave the paper above the ground surface, or it will act as a wick on a sunny day to remove moisture from the plant.

:)
Sally (N.Ireland) Organic as far as I know!

Plant plenty.  Celebrate success.  (Let selective memory deal with the rest.)

Thanks triage, thanks Sal.

Believe it or not - I can't find a newspaper anywhere in the house!  Tried folding bbc.co.uk but that didn't work.

Anyhow, Sals method works with A4 copier paper (unfolded), so I'll try a few of them for my beans.  I've always got tons of scrap A4 paper lying around.  Turning in the top a little seems to keep them better shaped.
