Title: Pigs Week 24.5
Post by: Roughlee Handled on April 10, 2009, 19:24
I got my pigs today.  We did not have the electric fence turned on on the holding pen for them and one got straight out and then off. Down the feild this happened 3 times and I had to rugby tackle the weener to catch it.  It now knows the fence is electric.

Talking of pigs............I popped down to our local free range pork producer today and the topic of conversation was boy piggies' tackle. Apparently it's curly, like the tail. Now, I'm not sure if they were winding me up or not ::) Anyone know?

By the way, they're lovely. I couldn't raise one (a piglet) and eat it :tongue2:

The pig that did not run round the feild 3 times and have me rugby tackle it to the ground will let me scratch its bacon.  Its amazing how much they sleep.   Suppose they do need beauty sleep. I must say I am a lot happier now than I was on Friday.  I remember lieing on the ground with pig after the 3rd escape and  the 7th rugby tackle both me and the pig where knackered.  I had the pig in a tight embrace and we just lay there for five mins. I was not looking forward to the getting up and the staggering back with the pig.  I was considering suckling pig.

Forgot to mention scared myself silly the first morning as there was no sign of the pigs. You could not see them. They appeared not to be in the arc...............

But they where under all the straw. at the bottom. covered!!!!!

They have slightly pink ears.
I have provided shade for them and they even have a wallow (they have not found it yet.)
They are spending all there time rooting.
They are not even eating all there nuts!!!
The shade are some pallets made into a wall and rood you can see it above to the left of the arc.

We do not have anywhere to keep them in the winter.  So they are off to slaughter.

Hmmm. I think I could manage that. Keep a lady pig, have piglets and sell them on to people.
 ;)
Reading your updates with interest, Roughlee, even though I'm a softie! Don't tell me when you send them away........... :(

One is getting very friendly.
*.
Er I am trying to stop it. (the liking the porkers)
This video started off so well until I commented about its trotters.  I might as well as said "cooochycooooo little piggy"
OK I know that I have to get the pigs to like me. Just in case I have to get them to the vet and stuff.  Oh the one that I had to Rugby tackle to the ground 3 times when it escaped 3 times still does not trust me.

I've been so excited about your pigs, just dreaming about when I can do the same thing (will be a few years before I can think about it).

Think you might have just thrown a great big spanner in the works with that video. They are so adorable, I'd be in grave danger of falling in love with them. How could you kill something that rolls over to have it's tummy scratched?

But then again...

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

                                        ...bacon...

Once they get a little size on them they do much better through the winter then they do the summer. They do however put on weight a tad slower but not much.

Yup it this weekend.  Anyone welcome even FCG in his weekend wear.  Off now to apply factor 30 to there ears as they got very burnt yesterday.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 2 Crispy pig ears. Sun and how can I stop them getting sunburnt.
Post by: Roughlee Handled on April 20, 2009, 09:39
So this morning I have applied Factor 30 to there ears.
They have shade.
They have an area of wet mud to wallow in but they do not want to wallow.
Its not Hot Hot, just very sunny so they do not know they are getting burnt.
The wife is getting some total block today.   If they are bad tonight I will attempt to get them into the barn tomorrow in the day.  This will not be an easy task as they are easy distracted and I cant lift them now 1 week and the have got heavy!!!
Any sensible ideas?

See if you can get some sun tan lotion with a herb scent.  That way they will be ready marinated.  Seriously though, the poor things burn just like we do, going to have to watch out for that with the Tamworths.

They plaster mud onto rhinos and elephants in zoos too cause it not only protects them from the sun but keeps the skin soft and cool.

Hopefully they won't start tearing up the turf. No joke you need heavy equipment to cover the ruts made by a hog! I had to use a blade behind a tractor to level the lot back out and there were places that  I almost got high centered with the Kubota!

But the ground sure is fertile now and will grow most anything.

Can you see the ears.  They are looking better but the black stuff is scabs from sunburn. I am pleased it is raining as it will give the ear time to heal.

Yes little lad can feed them.  They are friendly, though do lean against and rub you if you stand still to long, also will try and taste unknown footwear and clothing. Horses will love apples. So will pigs. I quarter them as they go further ( the apples not the animals).

Did I not tell you that Birdo and friends have moved out while there new accommodation is being built.
The chicks will take his mind off Birdo, they are supposed to be hatching today and tomorrow.  So they will be really small plus have the ones that hatched on the 25th of March.  So plenty to distract him.
Not forgetting the two dogs.

Roughlee, before the shed war commences I wondered if you could help me out with a little bit of info about rearing pigs?
We are in talks with some other plot holders about getting some pigs as a "pig club" like they had during the war. I wondered if you had any idea of the costs ie. feed and slaughterhouse costs, butchery etc. in relation to the meat produced. I'm not too worried as it is the quality of the meat and welfare that I'm most concerned about but it would be nice to have a guide for other "pig club" members. Loving the photos. Cheers, Nic.

I am looked at these costs.
http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/articles/pigs/costs/
Item                      Unit cost   No.   Total
Tamworth weaners     £35.00      2      £70.00
Feed                         £7.25       38     £275.50
Straw                       £2.50        4      £10.00
Slaughter                 £23.00       2      £46.00
Butchery                  £20           3      £60.00
                                           Total   £461.50
The feed I am giving them is £8.50 its not organic or anything special.  It sounds allot but then you work out thats approx 50 kilos of meat per porker. You will not get bacon off them as they need to be over a year old.  Pigs I must say are simpler that chickens.
This is my first time so I am still estimating.
I did have a thought the other day in the shower that pigs would be good at clearing allotments either unused an over grown or cleaning out after a growing season as they turn over the soil and fertilise it as well!!!!! You could hire out your porkers.  I must say that my best idea so far was asking my local corner shop for all there out of date veg, was excellent as I had 6 bags of "waste" (just from Saturday) and it filled there stomachs good and proper.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 5.
Post by: nicchick on May 11, 2009, 11:28
That is brilliant, thanks for that! Just to give us an idea, you are doing so well with yours. The fruit and veg must be so good for them too. The bit of ground we have in mind was a plot years ago but has become very overgrown so it would be perfect for them. We have spoken to about half of the plotholders so far and they are in favour so wish us luck with the others! I got so excited yesterday that I made myself feel ill - how sad. Thanks again for all the info, I had a feeling you would have done the number crunching.... Nic.

One major issue is do you or your allotment have a defra holding number? You will need one before anyone can sell you a pig.  How big a space do you have?  I am keeping mine of a 1/4 of an acre at the moment. I can still see grass !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, our allotments are really old and in the past had all sorts of animals but I didn't know about the defra number - I suppose that's our next step after getting the go-ahead.
I am friends with a pig vet so can find out what to do. We aren't rushing into it and it will be a long term thing, so hearing how you are doing is really useful. Thanks again, Nic.

After our pigs were on about 2 acres for a little over a year it looked like giant moles had attacked the lot and I worked a tractor and box blade for close to a week steady to get the ground back level. But the hogs dug out all of the Johnson Grass roots and killed it off and I was left with soil that grew plants that were a rich dark green.

Post by: Roughlee Handled on May 12, 2009, 10:00

How many pigs did you have on two acres nnbreeder?  I am only keeping these porkers for 6 may be 7 months.  Mainly because it gets very very wet up here and it would not be a happy life for them.  Last time it rained all day they did not come out of there ark (pig home) only for food.  I am thinking about may be planting some root or veg for next years pair this autumn an you never know I may get to eat something.  At the moment I have 1/2 acre (not rubbing you nose in it honest  Knight Family) split into two and when they muck up this 1/4 of an acre I am going to move them into the next.  After 5 weeks it looks like they may stay on the first 1/4 for the whole length of time. I have a small area of native rhizome reproducing grass, similar slightly to Johnson Grass, its a common pointer ill drained soil and is a member of the Juncus family. Anyway they love rooting in there but are not eating the rhizomes :(
Next year I will be looking at getting a darker skinned breed as I have to keep an eye on the weather forecast and apply factor 40 to there ears on sunny days.  They as yet do not like water being splashed on them or like wallowing in mud!!!!!!
nicchick or anyone else that is considering pigs I keep mine surrounded but an 3 wire 60cm electric fence run by a 12v battery and so far they have complete respect for the fence.
http://www.rutland-electric-fencing.co.uk/PageAnimalSwine.aspx
The only other thing I would say is pigs need shade but whether they will feel the need to use it is another matter.

Knight Family have you considered approaching someone in your area that has land may be wooded and you could rent it and use pork as a payment?

We had 1 Boar and four sows.

Really? they don't like getting wet? Ours would root out big gaping holes when it rained and often all that could be seen was their snout above water, oh and their ears, pigs do hate getting their ears wet. Through the summer I ran misters in the barn 24/7 as our summers can be quite hot for long periods. It's nothing to have up to 30 days straight of temps above 100 deg F
Title: Re: Pigs Week 5.
Post by: Roughlee Handled on May 13, 2009, 07:30
No chance (i hope) about the temp getting that high for that length of time.  These two are not really in to digging big holes YET but there is time.

They spend most of there time asleep in the shade area and have told me that they wanted there bedding replace in the pig arch (house) by not sleeping in there for a couple of days.  Down one of our fence lines we have been putting our horses inedible hay and they have been found sleeping our in that!!!!!!!

"PIG OIL" I said "Your pulling my todger arnt you."
"No" Said Caroline "I oiled up me boar and me sow yesterday. Do you want some?"
"Oil?" I said "Yes Please"
"Its like baby oil but with out the smell" Said Caroline.

Title: Re: Pigs Week 5.
Post by: SMD66 on June 29, 2009, 07:31
I am looked at these costs.
Feed                         £7.25       38     £275.50
It sounds allot but then you work out thats approx 50 kilos of meat per porker. You will not get bacon off them as they need to be over a year old.

Sorry this quote is from way back on the thread, but just to let you know, we DID get bacon from our 7 month old pigs.
We had half the back as loin joint and 1/2 as 'middle' bacon. This was from a large white cross Glouchestershire old spot.
As for food costs, it cost us £70 to feed 1 pig up to 7 1/2 months old, (£6.60 per bag).

I am really sorry to say this Roughlee but  on your last pic your porkers were looking distinctly porky!  hope you don't get more fat than meat.  :)
Title: Re: Pigs Week 5.
Post by: Roughlee Handled on June 29, 2009, 07:39
Well they is pigs.  They have another 3 months ish to go.  Fingers crossed they may have burnt the fat off by then.  I have read  that you cant get bacon off pigs under a year old, hence the term "porkers".  As this is my first time of .... doing it alone.  Keeping pigs that is I am doing it by the book and feed bag.  I do agree they look slighty fatty around the face but as I know nothing about the breed or pigs just hope I am doing it correctly.  Fingers crossed. :D
Title: Re: Pigs Week 11
Post by: SMD66 on June 29, 2009, 07:45
It all a bit of a mystery the 1st time, I know.  We read a lot and thought that the pigs had to be much bigger for bacon too.  From our 1st pig we had half with all pork for a 'customer' and from the other half we had pork from 1/2 the loin, bacon from the rest.  Sausage from the shoulder, (about 20lb) and ham joints and gammon steaks from the leg.  Very versatile animals!
Our butcher was a great source of information, helped us out a lot.
what breed are yours?  Dual purpose?
Title: Re: Pigs Week 11
Post by: Roughlee Handled on June 29, 2009, 09:17
They are Gloucester old spot crossed with Middle White.  But they look more like there mum (a Middle White) as I did not want any distinguishing marks for my first two.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 11
Post by: SMD66 on June 29, 2009, 09:27
I think you could get some bacon from them then without having to wait a year.
I can understand why you don't want 'distinguishing marks' but we did name our first 4 pigs.  (and the current 5 ) Janice was the 1st to go, (named after Janice Battersby cos she was bossy and noisy).  Must admit it's not nice taking them to slaughter, but it's part of being a pig keeper and has to be done.  They have at least had a much better life than the vast majority of pigs.  :)

I just tried not to think about it too much.  I put it out of my mind before the day and on the day just looked at it as a job to do, load them, un-load them etc...  My OH went too and as we left the abbatoir he asked why I hadn't 'said goodbye,' to them.  Simple..... I couldn't.  From that moment on they became pork and we also had the borrowed sow who had just had a litter of 12 to keep our minds occupied.

Hi There,
Just wondering if you still have your pigs?  Reason being I have just got 2 pigs and they are 13 weeks old, this is my first time doing it and I am not sure how long to keep them for and what weight I should be aiming for.  They are a Saddleback cross with a Duroc.  Like you they are for the freezer....
Thanks

Hello and welcome to the mad house CharFlor. Yes I still have my pigs. It is now week 13 (that I have had them) and they are 22 weeks old.

I am in the same boat as you they are looking big (my pigs), but are they are at slaughter weight?  I have no clue sorry.  All that is in the pigs favour is I have to purchase a trailer so they can go to slaughter and that will not happen till September.  But the lady who breed them is coming over in 3 weeks to pick up some chickens I have incubated for her.  Sorry I can not be any help.

as pig scales are not readily available we did it by measurement.  Got this from a book, 'teach yourself keeping pigs' by Tony York.

Measure, in inches (easiest while they are eating)
length from middle of ears to root of tail
girth around shoulders tight up to front legs

multiply length by girth and divide by 12 if lean, 11 if meduim and 10 if fat.  The answer is in lbs.

we found it best to send ours for slaughter when they weighed 170 lb (40 x 47 / 11)

This gave a good sized carcass with plenty of meat.  (we had pork and bacon from it)

It took 1 of our pigs 6 months to get to this size and the other three  took 71/2 months.

if you want all bacon and cured meat then you could let them get bigger.  any smaller and the meat isn't as plentiful.

Hope this helps  :)

Looks like a cross between a wolf hound and a Shetland pony.

We bought a second hand horse box to transport ours.  livestock trailers are so expensive and second hand ones are few and far between.  The horse box does the same job.
We are looking for a new freezer too, for more pork eventually and for the hubbards, I am a member of 'Which' magazine and in their latest tests on chest freezers the fridgidaire ones came out good

The picture shows pork joints from 1/2 a pig to give you an idea of amounts.  You can see the tv remote for a bit of perspective

..........they have 1 bad day...........

Where they are going is a small butchers with an abattoir round the back.  Its been recommended to me by two people.  You ring for a time. Pigs go in the trailer have a bit feed, sleep all the way there and then get out in a small yard with lots of new smells.  Good fun up to now.  The only bit that may distress is when (I am imagining) the get separated for a couple a min or two. Stunned and that it.  Feeling a bit sad typing it.  But I knew I would.  Its gonna be more stressful for me.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 15
Post by: SMD66 on July 27, 2009, 11:25
sounds like a nice small set up, less stress for the pigs.   :)
Still, not easy, but they won't have long to worry about it.
Don't over do the feed as you load them and try to make sure they've had nothing that morning, the slaughter men have an easier job and much prefer it if the pigs have an empty stomach.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 15

it does sound like a really good setup...... im a vegetarian, but only because of the way animals are kept and slaughted. your pig look like they have had the life of luxury, lived the ways pigs are supposed to live, and not stressed by long cramped journeys to the slaughterhouse. we are hoping to buy a smallholding in a few years and i would like to keep animals the way they should be kept but still use them for meat.....i was just teasing.....but i know its still gonna be hard for you ;) my hubby's fav meal is a bacon butty...he's already saying he's going off bacon and we dont even have pigs yet! he he he

we celebrated with one of our pigs, huge hog roast and loads of friends and neighbours, they had to fetch their own beers and a little bit of something for the freezer in exchange for a wonderful day.
the other went in the freezer, its very suprising what people fetch.i'd never had lobster before.and at that price probably never again.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 20
Post by: Roughlee Handled on August 25, 2009, 09:17
Its been five weeks since my last post.   Sorry.
It is now Week 20.

Any who. The lady I got the pigs from came to see them on Sunday.  Her batch from the same litter went last week so mine are not that far behind. Mine are outdoor kept so take longer to mature.  I do not believe they have grow much in the past month. But I am going to try and make time to measure them tonight.
I have purchased a trailer (ebay) and pick it up on Saturday. Freezer is installed and on. So next week I have to book them into the abattoir.  I have to work out what to have. The wife wants to swap a half pig for a whole lamb. But what to do with the rest? Definitely hams but the rest I am not sure.  I am going to see if I can have a chat with the butcher and ask him.
I also have to decide if I am going to watch the deed at the abattoir, and wait for the blood for black puds.

Some photos taken this morning at 06:50am

I know what you mean. Look good enough to eat don't they.

On a serious note, looking at the photos once I have taken then they do look cute and nice. But they are rapidly out growing there shelter and it is not nice here in the winter. If I do not do it they will go to market and some one else will.   I like my pork and at least I know that these girls have had the best lives if not short (not as short as supermarket pork).  I do not want to turn veggie.

When we decided on cuts from ours I just thought of what I usually bought most of, sausages, chops, occasional joint, ham...whatever.
Ours are about 1 month from slaughter, good job, we are getting low on sausage.  It's a good job it hasn't been a BBQ summer or we would have had to buy some and I can't bear the thought of that.

We unloaded ours and left, but it is a big slaughter house and I don't think we would have been allowed to watch if we had wanted.  The smell when you arrive might put you off!  :tongue2:

Barbecue summer. I was stood out side in the poring rain on Sunday, Barbecuing it took 4 hands to light it, one to hold the brolly. But looking forward to home made sausages. Now as we are busy I was thinking of getting the sausage meat made into batches and then freezing it.  Make an initial batch of sausages then defrost the meat later make the next batch and may be refreeze. Do not shout at me if you should not refreeze, I am a man and I am just thinking.

Thanks noshed.

I know what the smell is like as there is a big abattoir at the back of ASDA Colne and OMG it smells bad. Can you imagine going to do your weekly shop with that stench!!!!

They are going to a small abattoir/butchers so no smell.

Best way to do it.  Local abbatoir, no long stressful journey, no scared animals penned up spreading fear and good quality meat at the end of it.

The meat I get back will not be fresh as you think, I will not get it back on the same day or week. The meat will be delivered to the butcher of my choice. Then hung and then butchered to what ever we want but that still has not been decide yet.

Hi ours are being done on friday, we get one done as pork and the other as bacon, treat yourself to an electric mincer if you have'nt got one,  mine has a sausage making attachment, mind you some of the sausages I make are hardly sausage shaped but great fun, and pork and bacon burgers better than beefburgers.

Well it's time when you realise you either eat food kindly produced or have acquired two large pets.

Perhaps if everyone had to be acquainted with their food and part of the process of production there would be more respect and less waste.

If those incredible figures are true, we waste a third of the food we buy in this country.

Next April I will happily take all the local waste food to feed the new pigs.

Total cost so far.

Even if does work out more in money (or even not much cheaper) your pigs will have had a better stress free life which in my book counts for a lot  :). I seem to recall that stress on an animal means tougher meat, so yours ruff should be nice and tender  :D

Yes and they get to eat grass.

Well I am guessing at the moment but I will probably get about 50-60 KG off each pig.
So 100kgs ish in total.
Half a pig as sausages and Bacon and the rest pork joints and one ham (boned) we are going to try and air dry it.

Imagine the best tasting pork (top end organic with all the extra bells and whistles) provenance is the best you can get and then you are comparing it with supermarket stuff.  There is no comparison.
You will have paid more for it (slightly) but you will no way have paid what it should have cost if you where to purchase a like for like comparison product.
I am looking at it as freedom foods product with added pillows and massages but with the added benefit of it being better in taste.

Wow, I was amazed at your food costs, at 35 weeks (at slaughter) ours had cost £70 per pig to feed.  My food cost £6.60 per 25kg bag.  The pigs weighed about 160 - 170 lbs live weight.  1/2 pig returned 70lb lean meat.
Still, I know we don't raise them for the money, it's all about quality of life and quality of pork.  :)

Yes it is for the pigs and us.

If I was able to get the feed at your price it would have cost me £204.60  So may be I should shop around next year and may be get it by the pallet.

naughty pigs eh?    :(
Maybe as they have a shelter rather than an arc and they didn't fancy going in to somewhere? Keep feeding them in the trailer only so they get used to it.
To be on the safe side you could even load them the night before, put some straw and water in, they can have a good night's sleep then trundle of in the morning with no stress for you or them.
Good luck...again  :)

I have not chickened out, or telling porkies.  Honest.
I had problems getting them to cross where the fence was. They then got frightened.  They then decided that roots in the feild was a better option than having my breakfast.  I have built a run to the trailer and we will see what happens. Fingers crossed.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 20

it's typical that they wont cross the 'invisible line' where the electric fence used to be when you want them to, but when you don't, they're off like a shot!

Try a straw 'path' into the trailer.

Remember, you can't push a pig, they tend to jack-knife.

I have had that experience with horses as well.  A rearing 16.2 horse is no fun when you have hooves inches from your nose.  I have found that a Chifney bit works wonders.

I cannot unfortunately use one on a pig.  I did have a regular walker come past and offer me his dog lead!!!!!!!!!!

They had there breakfast again in the trailer!! Not much encouragement needed. Oh well learning cure.

Title: Re: Pigs Week 20
Post by: Roughlee Handled on September 03, 2009, 12:11
OK slightly calmer.
My source of information is slightly lacking.  Though very nice and very helpful and a good person.
She lives on a farm all her life and has kept and sold pigs for 5 years. Normally sold pigs to people that have kept them before.

I have been keeping pigs slightly naughtily!!
Though ignorance is not a defence I thought I had done everything by the book.

I have a DEFRA holdings number.
I have read the web page = http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/id-move/pigs/index.htm (http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/id-move/pigs/index.htm)
The pigs are tagged/identified in one ear.
The AML2 form (Pig Movement Licence)was finished and sent to the local trading standards when I went and got the pigs.

So I ring Local Trading Standards to ask for a new AML2 form as I spoilt the last one by filling it out before loading and dated and signed it.
Local Trading Standards "Can I have your holdings number....."
LTS "Your not a registared keeper of pigs, You have no heard number."
Me "Oh B"gger"
LTS "I will give you the Number of your local Animal Health Office you will need a number and tag from them"
Me "Thank you"
Local Animal Health Office "The pig team are a bit pushed at the moment can I take your number and get some one to call you back."
Me "They are supposed to be going to slaughter this Monday."
LAHO "OK I will try and get someone to you ASAP."
Half an Hour Later.
LAHO "Hello firstly we need to registrar you as a keeper of pigs, you will then get a herd number, then they must go to slaughter with two tags one for the breeder and the other one for your heard number."
Me "Oh B"gger"
LAHO "We are between systems at the moment. You are now registered as a keeper of pigs. But you will have to wait till Monday when we will download the information to the old system that creates the herd numbers and then it is checked and then a letter is sent to you with your herd number. At that point you can order the tags"
Me "Oh B"gger"
So the pigs now have a bit longer to wait.  I am guessing at least 1 week may be two.
On a better note I have been told by the wife that the pigs are top and tail asleep in the trailer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: added a bit of info about my source of information.

What a b*gger!

I didn't understand this bit tho.
LAHO "Hello firstly we need to registrar you as a keeper of pigs, you will then get a herd number, then they must go to slaughter with two tags one for the breeder and the other one for your heard number."

When we sent ours we used a slap marker with our herd number on, didn't need any info on breeder.  We were a bit retiscent to try to attach an ear tag onto a moving pig.  The slap marker worked well and they hardly flinched.

I should also contact your abbatoir, they will need some information from you and you will have to fill in a form for food chain information and consignment details.  You can get these forms from the local animal Heath and Welfare Team.

It is a bit of a minefield 1st time around but you will get the hang of it.

I basically need a herd number.  Then some ear tags and a applicator. I have found that you can get some tags (plastic) blank so I can write my herd number on.

that's good, didn't know you could get blank tags.
We were terrified at the thought of slap marking the pigs, it's basically a bed of nails!  Anyhoo, they didn't mind and the marking was clear when we got the meat back.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 20
Post by: Roughlee Handled on September 03, 2009, 15:20
I did think about slap marking them.
Slap marking is your herd number or DEFRA Holdings Number tattooed onto the pigs shoulder.
But you have to slap mark both front shoulders and this would not be easy after the first shoulder.  Also you have to wait for the slap marker to be made.

If I go down the ear root I will only have to do one thing to them and then that is it. I could tag them when they are having there tea though it will not be as easy now they are in the trailer.  I will at the weekend try gently putting pliers round there ears just to see if they have probs.

the slap marker does look nasty true but we were surprised how little the pigs reacted.  We did it while they were eating and could do one shoulder after the other without them being bothered.  to be honest they react more to the electric fencing!

Dam and blast.
If the pigs are going to slaughter you have to have heat proof tags.
these
(http://www.shearwell.co.uk/catalogue/images/tags/button.jpg)
are not I will need these
(http://www.shearwell.co.uk/catalogue/images/tags/PAT_Tags.jpg)
But this means that I have to wait now for the herd number.

with reference to the slap marking, i think it has only been in recent years that the slap is done on the shoulders! where i worked, a few years ago our pigs had to be slapped in the armpit, the soft sentitive bit behind their elbow  some of our maximus boars would kill you as soon as look at you! they were the size of small horses and had tusks!  they certainly did flinch when it was done there! which i think is why they changed it to both shoulders!

Title: Re: Pigs Week 20

I have to wait for Animal Health Agency http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalhealth/ (http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalhealth/)to give me a herd number, they will tell me this by letter!! Then I have to have some metal ear tags made with the herd number on them. Then its D day. When is a good question.
I now have another problem with the trailer.
One pig had got zapped by the electric run to the trailer and refused to got to the trailer with out allot of encouragement.  I took down the fence and after they got over the fence not being there they went into the trailer and had a feed. Now one of the pigs is sporting a bit of a graze on its side from the other after a fight about food in the trailer and does not want to go in.
sigh.  :(
So I am going to replace the Electric run with pallets and stakes so no matter what happens they are going to get herded to the trailer and can not get out.
I am starting to look forward to getting rid of them because I am having to many sleepless nights thinking about loading the big heavy pigs.

Re- the Food Chain Information, our slaughter house wanted the production site details BEFORE we took the pigs and the consignment form WITH the pigs.  It may have been because it's a big place and they will have lots of paperwork.  Still, I would check what yours want just incase.

consignment form? or do you mean the AML2 form?
Title: Re: Pigs Week 23
Post by: SMD66 on September 22, 2009, 14:26
The AML2 is the movement licence

The food chain information has 3 parts,

1, production site details.  Basic info on where they are kept and which vet is registered to look after them. etc.  Filled in once and sent to slaughter house before the day.

2. Consignment details,  contact details etc, how many and what type of pigs, id method, if they have had any vet treatment etc.  This if filled in for each consignment.

3.  Additional Info,  Only needed to be filled in if pigs have had any medical treatment.

http://www.food.gov.uk/foodindustry/guidancenotes/meatregsguid/fcipigslaughter.

If I remember right I got mine from the local animal health and welfare team.

That's fine then, as I thought, smaller slaughter house, a bit more of a relaxed approach.  I wanted to help make sure you didn't have a wasted journey.
I would be happier using a smaller concern but there is only one other place within reasonable travelling distance and I have heard reports that you don't necessarily get the right meat back.  That's why we went for slap markers too, if the head has been taken off, (as is usually the case)  then the Id has gone.
The larger place we use is used by our butcher and he has the meat delivered straight to him from the slaughter house.  It saves us having to try to transport huge pig carcasses in the back of the car.  :)

We have a 40 minute journey  :(

Isn't it a shame that small scale pig keepers can't have a licensed slaughterman come to the premises like in the olden days?  You could have the blood and everything.
I was speaking to an old farmer's wife the other day, she used to have the, 'pig's fry' for lunch on slaughter day.  A bit of pork, liver, kidney some gland she mentioned, (don't even want to go there).  She said there was nothing like it.  She also used to wash out the intestines for sausage casings.  I don't think I'd fancy doing that but I am sure the sausages were fantastic.
I think I should have lived about 50 yrs ago.  ;)

Can't find how to quote from a page before this one but think yourselves very lucky.  We have no slaughterhouses on the Island and our 'meat' has to be taken to the mainland and then sent back to be 'butchered'. (That doesn't sound quite right to me and I hope you understand what I mean).  Our friend is a butcher for a local lamb producer and they are all Island Grown and are then shipped (ferried) off and then returned 48 hours later for him to sort out.  On going petitions etc to have our local one re-opened.

There is the need if you ask the local producers of livestock but those who are in 'power' have decided we don't.  The local Council are on the side of the stockmen (I think that's the right word) but it's those who are in power higher up who stop it.

Hi, i stumbled across this disscusion, and feel i must share with you my hellish morning, i live in Spain and this morning a local farmer decided to slaghter his pigs, although im sure he employed a slaughter man to do the job, i can not tell you how distersting the noise was, i had to fill the house with very loud music, my thorghts of past conversations with ex pats on the terrible sightings of this operation makes me feel sick, i would feel a lot better if these beasts were taken to a registered place and the job done there, a lot of spanish will not employ a slatherman and attempet to do the job themselfs, i dont want to go into detail but let me say a lot of unnecssary suffering goes on, as it is a lot of  people seem to get a kick out of cruelty, you only have to look at bull fighting, any way the reason for my contribution is when i read the passage from SM D66 saying what a shame you couldnt have the slaghterman on site, i only wish i could do something here to bring to light this terrible suffering that these poor innocent beasts go through in the hands of the inexperienced, this i dont surpose will ever change here but as a part of europe i would have thorght this pratice of slaughter illegal? Well done, keep up the good work! I have friends who have moved to Spain and say come visit, I won't, because of the Spanish attitude to animals. Many years ago I went to a wedding in Spain. Hi Rubellite before i moved to Spain i came from colchester, i was born and bred there, thats where i vist 2x a year to vist family and friends, we keep away from Spanish festivals refuse dinner invitations from the Spanish, unless we know them really well, the good news out of this is that with the british working very hard to bring aweareness of the need to treat animals with respect, opening charity shops to fund refuges, etc nagging goverment to help, the problem is less, you do have english folk wanting to go to a bull fight, they defend themselfs by saying its the spanish custom, well it was once the custom in the uk to burn people at the stake because they were thorght to be witches, where would we be if we all still held on to old customs? while holiday makers still want to vist such places we have no chance of stopping it.

Back to the subject PIGs.

Today is Monday (well when I wrote this)

Last Wednesday I rang the abattoir and spoke to a girl about booking the pigs in.
"Can I bring them Friday" ME
"Er er Yes. Before half ten." Girl
"Ok thanks see you then." Me
"Can I have a name. " Girl
"Yes Stuart...."  Me
"See you Friday" Girl

A friend turns up to help load.  I have been loading the girls every other day for weeks, the pigs have been sleeping in the trailer. So it was quick and easy to get them in.

So I turns up Friday about nine. No one about! Ring the main number and....
"We do not do pigs on Friday only on Monday and Wednesday no liquid on see...." Slaughter man  "Yes your booked in .....I am gonna give someone a B@ll@rking."

The Slaughter man came and explained that because they do not have the liquid on they can not dip the pigs (to take of the hairs) so if I wanted them doing I would loose all the rind (fat and taste).  He said it would be a shame as they looked good.
Booked them in for Monday.
I checked them in the trailer and they just yawned at me!!! Stressed no. Relaxed yes.

So back they came home.  Now they have 30 mins of motorway and 15 mins of bumpy A and B roads back home and when they got back they where very stressed and panting.  Oh poo I thought, never going to get them back into the trailer.
I had given away all my feed to the freind that had helped me load! So got them unloaded and when a purchased feed.

They would not eat allot as not in the mood.
It they would not even go near the trailer.
I left them to get cool down.
At that night they did not sleep in the trailer I went out at 21:00hrs and they where sleeping out. I followed them round and where ever they lay (normaly on waste hay) I wet the hay and them.  I then called them to the trailer and they came but did not stay.

I left them to it.
Saturday slept out
Sunday day they came in once and slept.
Sunday night I checked at 22:00 and they where sleeping out. :(
Early start have to be there before 08:00!!! So up at 6 (normal) and out.
They where asleep in the trailer.  :)  Tiptoed up and closed the ramp while they slept.
Loaded and then filled out the AML2 movement form. I was there at 07:40 the pigs where cool and calm.  Waited for the person in front to unload then the pigs.  While I was waiting I looked at the other pigs. OMG mine are huge compared with the others.  My turn came to unload and would they come out of the trailer.
NO
It took three people to "encourage" them out.  Two by the ears and me behind.  Once there heads where out they wandered off sniffing the new smells.

"There a bit bigger than you said, I about 120KG's" Slaughter man

That is twice the weight they should have been!!!!

Oh well live and learn.

WELL DONE  :D

I know how hard this 1st 'journey' is.  At least you are getting plenty of pork for all that feed.  :)

Next time you will have a bit of experience under your belt and will feel more confident, know what to expect etc.

Are they being hung? when do you get your meat?

Thanks for the info on going to the slaughter house, all our friends think we will be keeping our two girls for pets - but that is not the reason why we have them. mind you if anyone had seen **** ( no names) lying in my lap fast asleep at the weekend I could understand why they think that way. That's another thankyou for the tummy rubbing trick, ours also like being rubbed under the chin, either one causes them to go weak at the knees and flop down - often on top of one of us. My hubby has just spent the last few weekend renovating a fallen down stone field shelter and putting a roof on it ready for when it gets too cold and wet to leave them in just the wooden field house. They do seem to be very affectionate with him (or is it because he goes out last thing at night to make sure they are tucked up). May be get a photo if the weather improves.

Try weighing them with this formula from SMD66
as pig scales are not readily available we did it by measurement.

The answer is in lbs.

we found it best to send ours for slaughter when they weighed 170 lb.....
Mine had reached this weight (I am shocked when I realised this) back on the 8th of July

In that case at 22 weeks ish or 5 and a half months my two are 187lbs and 167lbs or in new money 85Kgs and 76Kgs. I think they may be ready.

But I did not have a trailer and I did not think it was right at the time.

Hindsight !!!

So go weight you pigs Daftodil. While they are eating.

OK the pigs will be back at the butchers on Wednesday. The butcher will ring me and the wife will go to see the butcher and he will explain what he can do to the carcases. He says depending on if they have 1 inch of fat, 2 inches.... depends what cut you can get from them. It is not as simple as I want loin bacon ......

bbq?

I think we may have a tasting where you can purchase some pork as well.

I am not sure is the answer. We will find out tomorrow (at the earliest)  when my butcher gives me a ring to tell me if they have arrived or not.  As I work 1 hour away the wife is going in to see the butcher and he will explain what cuts are available.

Does there come a point when they just put on fat?
I do not believe if they have the correct environment the should be lean. It depends on if I got the amount of daily feed correct. Think of them like humans if they are kept in front of the TV and fed they are going to be fat but if they have a bit of exersise.......

I will be very interesed in the amount of fat ruff, (on the pigs, not you)

I work on an amount of food per day, (plus greens etc) whereas you fed ad-lib.  Your pigs came to slaughter weight very quickly whereas mine take longer, (bearing in mind breed differences).

If yours aren't too fatty then maybe I will increase the feed.  Our last lot varied a bit, surprisingly the smallest had the most fat, the biggest was the leanest!  (9mm fat)

the wife will go to see the butcher and he will explain what he can do to the carcases. He says depending on if they have 1 inch of fat, 2 inches.... depends what cut you can get from them. It is not as simple as I want loin bacon ......

If they have a thick layer of fat the 'eye' of the meat is smaller and the piece of bacon will not look that appetising.  It's not so bad on a chop as you can have it cut thicker.

Good luck with the bacon, I wasn't as brave as to do my own.  Our pig supplier said he'd not done well with bacon and I didn't want to end up wasting any of the meat by ruining it myself.  I left it to the butcher.
Let me know how yours goes.  :)

They still have not arrived at the butchers and the if they arrive today the wife can not go and see them also, we have visitors staying this weekend so can't go tomorrow. I am only planning on doing a small piece of bacon and one leg as a ham the rest is being left to the butcher.

Come on, it's ignorance not malice. They're doing it for the best of reasons. I must admit it wouldn't have struck me that it was wrong and I am a little aware of the regulations. It's connecting the theory with those cute hungry piggies where I'd fail.
Title: Re: Pigs Week 24.5
Post by: SMD66 on October 01, 2009, 10:41
true, most people are unaware of the regulations and I only ever pointed them out to people in a friendly manner.  We don't have the problem now since our new permanent enclosure isn't near the road.
Still, I think it prudent of Ruff to put up a sign.  If trading standards/animal welfare got hold of the fact that the pigs are regularly fed by the public then he could be in trouble through no fault of his own.

Post by: Roughlee Handled on October 08, 2009, 09:52
The wife went to see butcher on Tuesday.

Pig One is 240lbs or 108kgs
Pig Two is 260lbs or 117kgs
Dead weight.

Which is a total of 225Kgs or just short of a 1/4 of a metric tonne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The butcher had taken the shoulder off from Pig and there was an inch of fat on the top.
We are hoping to get 1 pig back this weekend.

Luckily we love pork.

Oink

We are also considering sending out hampers to our family for Christmas.  They will contain pork!!!

WOW that's a lot of pork.  Our biggest weighed in at 72kg dead weight with 9mm back fat.
I personally prefer about that amount of fat, maybe just a bit more.
I am sure yours will taste delicious.  Well done, wonder if you'll still love pork tho in a yrs time!

It does take time to get it back, ours was the same, at least it is stored at a very low temp so no problem with the meat.

Ok Roughlee we "weighed" our two pigs whilst they were eating (with a tape measure from my sewing box) and they are 152lb and 145lb (last week). Hubby has now booked a day off in early December to take them "away". I have booked a family member for the following weekend to come and help butcher, sausage make, bacon make and joint a few bits. I reckon they should have put on the 20 odd pounds by then to bring to the 170lb recommended weight.  In case anyone is interested I have found another good site for info and products for making sausages and bacon - it has forums and links just like this one (so now instead of spending an hour or so reading evrything on this site I can spend a whole afternoon on both sites - wonder when I'll feed the pigs and chickens ::))site is http://www.sausagemaking.org/

If it's any help, our last batch were fed 4 lb food a day (plus apples etc) and put on around 6 - 7 lb a week. based on that yours should be up to slaughter weight by December.  Good luck!
